Gransport 2007 blower fan not going off when ignition turned off

Maserati Gransport LE 2007, blower fan motor stays on when ignition key turned off , hence flattened battery pretty quickly. Need to know if anyone else has ever seen this fault? I am electrically trained and believe it is a relay that has failed / has a set of contacts stuck thus allowing power to cont. to the blower fan even with ignition off (if it is that?) I think it is relay c or d in the passenger footwell any one any ideas please?

That’s a new one on me. Without wishing to make things worse, could it be that the Acc position on the ignition barrel not switching off? There have been issues with this.

Hi Zep thanks for replying. Everything else is dead other than curtesy lights, radio goes off but you can turn it on again which I think is normal. I turn the blower to off now when car is stored overnight. I have noticed my battery conditioner used to go to green healthy after an overnight charge but is now staying on yellow charging so there is drain somewhere (other than clock or radio alarm etc.) I have had blower motor faults i.e. stopped working which turned out to be the connector plug under the passenger side dash, had a right game with this as it looked in perfect condition I cleaned all contacts and it worked, but has stopped again twice, now working again. The current fault occurred when I put it away for a few days, the blower was selected to a low setting and must have stayed on and completely flattened battery. Once recharged I noticed the fan still ran with ignition off and key removed . Also the air con has stopped working (was fine) and is showing the letter E where the amb air temp display readout is on the dash board.

Hi Tony

I replaced the relay you mentioned on my 4200 about 6 weeks ago. The blower was working intermittently for about a year then wouldn't operate at all, so after much investigation replaced the relay and all now working as it should. As you suspect the relay is located under the passenger side below and left of the glove box. Take off the trim panel below the glove box (if not already removed and discarded) then pull back the carpet on the left side of the footwell and look up to find the relay - mine was a bright yellow colour and easy to spot. Photo of broken relay attached - purchased a new relay cheap on ebay. If you can't find it let me know and I will take a photo in situ. If the relay is stuck in the on position it could well be the cause of your problem.

Hope you get it sorted,

Terry

Have a look at the main accessory power relay too as that turns power on and off. It’s in the floor fuse tray.

Also look for water/coolant staining in the fuse box and on the terminals of the blower fan, it’s well know to puddle that side from either blocked AC drain and/or heater matrix leak.

If ok as others say, work back from the fuse and you should be able to work out where the issue is. A lot of the relays are interchangeable so quick to test, just mark it so you don’t get them mixed up.

Hi Terry Thanks so much for you note, really appreciate the response. I will locate the relay and replace as a matter of course (from whom did you purchase the relay from on ebay?)
The blower fan has been misbehaving for a few months now working then not working I thought it was the connection plug but it looks in perfect condition so it could well be the relay.

Hi Thanks for the response, really appreciated. Am I right to say that it is one of the two red relays, c, & d in the Maserati user manual? on the left hand bank of relays

Hi Thanks for the response, really appreciated. I had the ac drain blocked last year whilst driving down south , my wife said when we stopped that the map book in the passenger footwell was kind of floating!!! I cleared this with a bit of difficulty! Blower then started to act up only recently so checked power etc. and found what appeared to be a plug connection fault even thought it looked in perfect condition, I now think after reading Terry's response that it is likely to be the yellow relay he mentions so will change this as a matter of course plus look at the power relay Oneball mentioned (when I can identify it)

Hi Terry
I have removed and checked the yellow relay and its fine, contacts operation etc. upon replacing it it is definitely being energised which is why the fan can start when selected. I also removed and swapped relays C & D but no help.

Hi
I have removed and checked the yellow relay (as per Terrys recommendation and its fine, contacts operation etc. upon replacing it it is definitely being energised which is why the fan can start when selected with the ignition key out. I also removed and swapped relays C & D (2x red relays) but no difference i.e. Yellow fan relay still being energised. Without a wiring diagram I am stuck. You mentioned power relays, can you advise please where these are?

If you pull C and D in turn, does one of the affect the relay or the fan operation?

Hmmm. So the HVAC controller seems to be giving an output to the relay when the ignition is off. Have you tried relay G?

Ok. Do you have 12v at the cigarette lighter socket with the ignition off? If I recall correctly, this was not powered on my GS when the ignition was off.

I need to look at a circuit diagram that shows the relay associated with the blower fan I am wondering where I could get such a diagram? I think I am at the point now whereby I need to consult with the team at Shiltech Engineering who look after the car

Fuse 5 is shown as Air Conditioning and Ventilation system and fuse 45 also lists Air Conditioning and Ventilation, but shows it as cut out during starting (I.e. fed by relay C). The suspicion is that the controller is doing something it shouldn’t, running the fan when off. Either because it thinks the ignition is on, or because it’s broken.

There aren’t any diagrams I am aware of, so the next option to that is probably the preferable one.
