My GFs family and friends are all academics and also have no desire to own a nice car etc...in fact I am frequently told that none of her wealthy Dr and Prof frieds own cars like that. To which I retort 'so thats why they are so miserable and boring to be around'

All they seem to want to do is save for their old age.

Yep don't get that at all. I can understand not wanting to waste money but buying only books? What sort of woman doesn't want the odd nice item of clothing or visit a nice hotel and eat at a good restaurant? Certainly none that I'd ever be interested in and I bet that goes for most on here.

Mine still does and I am sure she uses it more than I do!
If we go anywhwere different we will take the Mas, sadly this means I have to drive there and back.

She says she is 'not bothered' about being seen it, especially now its a bit louder....... As for the kids, they don't ask to be picked up very often, but when they do

Everybody is into different things, it's no surprise that many guys like cars and Italian ones at that.

Much in the same way, some way be interested in reading books or researching novel ideas. It depends on what makes you happy, if you're content with letting the Ghibli go then problem solved. If not, I guess it's a rock and a hard place over nothing but some metal, rubber and some electronics.

The USS pension scheme is so generous that they don't need to. Tell them to buy some Masers.

The thing is she is from a family of university teachers whose main aim in life is to gain knowledge and not really have any desires for money. And she is totally like this.
Sounds like you're a lucky man, knowledge is worth a lot more than material things.

Who cares what others think? Life's too short to worry about what someone else *might think.

If a car means more to someone than their wife does then they've got bigger issues to deal with!

Totally agree with all of this. But there's a difference between not actively seeking a nice car (or anything at all) and rejecting it because of what others think. That would be similar to trying to forget quantum physics that you've learned because everyone else likes electron chemistry

Well - I am an academic (Professor and a Doctor). I am surrounding by those obsessed with savings and pension etc. Admittedly driving into the University Car Park isn't the least stressful thing I do. But I do leave it in sport and secretly love the look of suprise on their faces.
I see the car as a reward for my hard work, and applaud others that have the same or better. Live and let Live. Everyone has their own little vice they like spending money on - its just a shame for us its huge amounts of money on temperamental big lumps of metal!

There is no doubt knowledge, skill, compassion and humility means way way more than money (Trump as a perfect example.) It makes me feel a little less guilty buying nice things as I have sacrificed my time for the last 30 years. I do wish I didn't like cars to be honest, would make life easier. Just cant help it.

My wife is a doctor and academic and is not bothered about anything material since the birth of our daughter which is to be respected.

Good to see everyone's point of view.

I love my wife the way she is and it is the reason why we are married.

Unfortunately typically HK women are very materialistic! And real bitches because of it.

Losing the Ghibli is no real big deal. Just annoying to have bought a car and then having to get rid of it so soon especially since I was beginning to like it.

But lost as to what to do now. Like the idea of going Volvo now ;-p XC90? Hehe.
