Gear Selection

Hi Forum

Was out driving earlier when the red gear box warning light came on. I decided to continue driving to make it home, but was only able to select first and second. When changing from first to second, the change seems very laboured. Nothing happens when I try to select third. I managed to make it home and turned off the car. I turned the car on again and fifth gear seemed to be selected. turned off and on again and no gears were available for selection. restarted again and back to only having first and second again. This feels bad!

Any suggestions please?

Hmm. Try a battery reset? Check fluid level. Can you hear your pump priming when you unlock / open the door. Is it priming for > a few seconds?

Yes pump primes for a few seconds and fluids were checked two weeks ago. Will try battery reset.

Hmm. That would be bad indication then. Did you get a clutch reading when you bought?

Completed the reset and gear change seems okay now, but EOBD warning light is on now. Tried reset again, but light remains on. Any suggestions?

If the OBD light is lit a code scanner in the diagnostic port might throw up a code to check out?

Drove car again and original problem is back again. I can only select first and second gear and the red gear box warning light is on.

I seem to remember the clutch came with a 12 month guarantee from Lancaster, so might be best to take it back to them for further investigation as suggested.

I'm in the process of booking the car into Maranello Maserati Egham. Any theories as to what the issue might be?? Could the clutch fail so quickly after being replaced or could it be a wider gearbox issue?

Only if its been incorrectly installed I suspect.

Not heard of many gearbox failures.....its a wait and see moment....fingers Xed though

Thought I'd let you know that I heard from the garage and they couldn't find anything mechanical wrong with the car. They believe the issue relates to the gear box mapping, so they conducted a re mapping and learn mode of the gear box and car seems fine now. They also suggested that the issue may have been caused by the engine oil being slightly over filled. Something about the gearbox getting mixed messages from the engine! They've drained the overfill.

Hmmm. Doesn't sound entirely satisfactory, but I guess if you're back on the road, that's a win.

Hi there, think you can discount the clutch because that was not effecting 1st & 2nd selection, I would move towards the hydraulic pump as the 3/4th actuator requires full pressure to select/ move the rods etc. If it reoccurs I would get the primary pressures checked to establish if the pump is operating at it's best.

Cheers

Good info Dave.....would a failing pump not show up in other ways, or could it be the actuator playing up....listening to it, goes on for too long when priming, SD doesn't show up anything?

My view would be system is loosing pressure, whilst in use, could be a sensor overreading & cutting the pump out too early, or a small but signigicant leak, allowing a drop in operating pressure..
