Ars don't have a French backbone.
Depends how you define backbone but:
Polish Keeper (Szesney) - Main German Central Defender (Mertesacker) - Spanish Holding Midfielder (Arteta) - Spanish Playmaker (Cazola) - English/French Striker (Walcott / Giroud)
What has miffed the Arsenal fans is the lack of planning that we've seen the past three seasons.
Fabregas/Nasri - It was obvious they were leaving, but when did Wenger decide to reinforce? On deadline day after the first few games of the season. It took a hammering before we reacted in the marketplace buying Arteta, Mertesacker and Park.
RvP - He made his statement on 5 July that he would not be renewing his contract! 5 July! Yet the club bought no-one to replace him. Giroud was not a RvP replacement. We bought Cazola who was a replacement for Fabregas who left a year previous. Podolski was never an RvP replacement either, more of a Nasri type replacement - again one year late!
Song - Arsenal fans were saying we needed more defensive minded midfielders when Arteta and Song were at the club, Song left and Arsene signed no one to replace him.
Central Defenders - We've gone into this season with 2 central defenders...how ridiculous is that for a top 4 team? We finished the Villa game with Ramsey playing in central midfield. This is the same chap who put a magnificent through-ball for Walcott to score against Citeh a week prior, and we've got Ramsey in defence. Wenger got rid of central defenders he did not want (Squillaci and Djorou) and did not replace them.
Players throughout the summer have said that they are sure that the manager was going to sign some new players and that they were needed. It's obvious they were trying to force the issue. But now the players have had to be even more blatant and Giroud has said today that the club needs to sign another striker.
It is an absolute shambles.
We will of course sign people now, but it is reactive rather than planned. Whether we sign anyone good or not, you cannot run any major company on a purely reactive basis. It is absurd and you'll never get anywhere. Any player he signs now won't have the time to integrate, even if they play well - they would have played better if he'd of signed them in July and taken them on an 8 game pre-season tour.
That Wenger requires his team to get spanked at the beginning of ever season before he realises he must signs players is just awful and worrying. He's given Arsenal fans the best football that they've seen in my lifetime, and the most successful stint, but he really has lost it from a transfer and pre-season planning perspective.
