If the 4C handles well and they dont price it over £50k, then it is difficult to see how it will fail.

Providing it continues to stay rear wheel drive and a gearbox operated by flappies , that sort of power should put it in the GTR range , definately icon status withminimal depreciation , but will they stick to their guns, could almost make me push the boat out

I'd be interested but unfortunately I don't trust FIAT/Alfa to get it wholly right.

Maserati have produced the fastest GTs on the track (based on FIA GT1 results) in the last 6 years or so, but FIAT won't allow the road cars to get anywhere close to the Ferrari in terms of performance, despite sharing similar engines.

So what hope for Alfa? Would FIAT group allow a sub 4 second Alfa priced at <50K to compete against the Fezzas?

I think something will get watered down somewhere along the line.

This comes from the man who, seven odd years ago, had his deposit ready for the V8 400bhp Brera - I know the meaning of the word disappointment!

I hear you Pat. Maybe, just maybe, things are about to change.

The last concept to production car was the 8c - faster than a Maserati, ok it is a Maserati but you get where I am coming from.

***UPDATE***

If true, then this is more like it, Alfa designing and producing their own dual variable valve, efficient turbo, 4 cylinder 1.8

300hp in a car that weighs 850kg, thats 353hp per tonne!!!

To give you an idea, a Gransport has 235hp per tonne.

Isn't it the 1.4TBi with 240 bhp thats destined for the 4C?

Alfa Romeo has released the first details of a new direct injection turbo engine under development at the FMA plant in Pratola Serra in Italy, due to launch some time in 2013.

Designed for both transverse and longitudinal applications, the new 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine offers a maximum output of 300hp, setting a new performance standard in its category, the company claims, while also ensuring compliance with future emissions standards in both Europe with Euro 6 and the US with Tier 2 Bin 5.

Constructed entirely from aluminium for a minimal weight, Alfa Romeo claims that its design incorporates the highest levels of technological innovation ever seen in an Alfa, including a 200-bar petrol direct injection system, dual variable timing, and a high-efficiency turbocharger.

According to Alfa Romeo's internal design and testing, the egine will offer a power-to-weight ratio, fuel efficiency, acoustic and vibrational comfort, and driving performance unmatched by anything else in its category.

"This is an extremely important step for Alfa Romeo, as we continue to reposition our brand and prepare it for global distribution," claimed Alfa Romeo head Harald J. Wester at the announcement. "The dedication of Group-wide resources to develop specific powertrain solutions for the specific needs of Alfa Romeo is a reflection of the renewed thrust we are placing on the development of this brand. This is a first step in a series of initiatives to be implemented in the near future which will reconnect Alfa Romeo to its historical roots as a premium Italian sports car brand."

This sounds like the WGE engine development that Fiat have picked up from Chrysler.

Mikes I did think that but the extraction of 300hp from a suposide green engine and the fact that it states in the article that they are making their own block would seem to distance itself from the WGE.

They could just be lying to us I suppose.

Maybe FGA have finally worked out that customers are not going to buy an Alfa with a foreign engine in it. That's what happened with the Brera and 159 Yank v6.

It could be a bit of both Matt? Your original posting hints at Fiat picking up the all-alluminium construction and transverse / longitudinal technology already in the WGE, but transferring it to Italy where they can incorporate their DI and turbo technology. Sort of a love child between the TBi B unit and the WGE.

So if it's a case of picking up on Yankee block technology, but building on it entirely in Italy , and if the performance stats hold true, I would have thought that would satisfy the Alfisti?

Miles, in think most could stomach that yes.
