Exhaust Valve Control Mod (how to)

Hi I did :
GND to car earth and one solenoid terminal
+12v to car fuse box
Second solenoid terminal to NC normally closed.
So normally the solenoid is powered up and open and allowing vacuum through to shut the valves.
Pressing remote allows solenoid to shut, stopping vacuum and allowing valves to spring open.
I think. Seems to work anyhow

I had some issues as wel, i couldnt get the module to learn the remote buttons. I used a variable dc adapter that i plugged into a socket and then wired things up to test the wiring. Eventually got it working. But these cheap remotes have some bad instructions. Take some time and use a multimeter.

But yeah, you need to use the normally closed. Bu i had to bridge the 12+ to some other input on the module as well. I guess it uses the 12v+ to control, but to pass through the power there is a separate input. So it is actually not using the 12v+ input to power the NC or NO outputs.

Thanks all ... it turns out I had to bridge the +ve to COM

All working now ......

BUT ...

Obviously did something last night ... battery was dead this morning ! ...

I don’t know if I pulled a wrong fuse whilst trying to find an ignition switched one .... but now I have CHECK ENGINE light on ...

Seems to drive ok etc ..... but what do I do?


Arghhh week 2 of ownership ....

See other thread. Not sure though that +ve to COM is right. Have you checked the drain under those circumstances? Makes me suspect your solenoid is energised all the time....

Took it out for a good blast ... engine light has reset itself ...

No battery drain from what I can tell on multimeter ...

But it does automatically start with valves closed rather than open ... what’s the easiest way to switch that? Should i just change the feed to normally open instead of normally closed?

I would think that will sort it, yes. Of course, then they will be open all the time. Make sure you close them regularly to try and prevent them from corroding solid

You would be better having the solenoid a normally open and un-powered. The valves will always be open then. You can press the button and close for quiet start ups as required then.

You can also get to a exhaust shop and add some bypass pipes with a valve on the quattroporte. There should be enough room for some creative welding.

Welcome to the forum. These devices have been mentioned elsewhere in the thread, this is for folks who have a desire to do it themselves.

Ahh ... got it.

Well, the simplest way to keep the valves open at all times is to disconnect the vacuum lines from the exhaust bypass valve actuators at the two silencers. Plug the lines with a golf tee or something similar to prevent a vacuum leak. The valves will revert to the open position and remain open at all times.

The alternative if want to flexibility of toggling between open and closed is install a simple 12v relay into the circuit for the vacuum solenoid valve. Use the relay to toggle the circuit open/closed. You can get power for the relay off the hot side of the vacuum solenoid valve electrical cable. Aldous Voice mentioned to shunt in a dummy circuit to prevent diagnostic trouble codes from being generated ... which they would do on Ferrari's from the F430 and subsequent. Not sure if the Maserati will log trouble codes or not. But, easy way to find out is to pull the electrical plug off the vacuum solenoid valve and drive around for a bit and see if you get a check engine light. If no codes are thrown, then you can probably assume you are safe.

Yes, the issue with the joyous U.K. weather is that the valves corrode in position, making reversal difficult. Namaste mentioned the issue of codes being thrown in the post, this avoids any issues there.

Voicey did the install on Beb’s car.

Who needs exhaust valves! When you want it quiet on start up quickly shift it into drive. If you want it quiet when driving passed the authorities, shift into 5 or 6 and feather the accelerator. Lovely and quiet then. ;)

If anyone is interested, here is how to modify the original circuit with a on/off switch to toggle the bypass valves between normal and always open.

Material Req'd:
  • one 12 Volt Automotive Relay
  • two insulation displacement connectors
  • one toggle switch
  • one 5 watt, 500 ohm resistor (may not be necessary)
