Hi all

Not an owner yet but for the second time in 18 months I'm giving serious consideration to Maserati ownership.

I dabbled with the idea of a GS or QP at the end of 2009 but for various reasons didn't carry it through. I then reverted to type and acquired a 996 C4S but having scratched that itch my focus has returned to the direction I should have followed then!

It's time to review the fleet again and this time I'm looking at a Gran Turismo to replace the C4S and my current daily driver, a (cough) Focus ST.

Will probably have a few questions over the next few days so please bear with me!!

Cheers

Hi Paul, welcome to the world of Maserati, and a step up in class! You are going to love it. Good luck in your GT/S search and I look forward to seeing it in the metal one day.

Hi Paul - Welcome on board!

If you can, I'd recommend keeping the daily driver in the fleet. The GT is a great car and to truly appreciate it you'll want to smoke around in something else when doing mundane tasks or just wanting to be a bit incognito. A GT gets a fair amount more attention than most cars in the price bracket, which is cool sometimes and not so cool other times - memories of being parked up on a dodgy council estate in Manchester whilst fighting with my satnav and looking up to see a crowd around the car! It took me by surprise but as always, it got a positive reaction.

Bring on the questions!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.

The GT is part of a plan to reduce the number of cars in the household I'll still have an alternative to turn to when I don't want to be noticed.

I'm a big fan of all things Porsche and that won't change. The C4S is a cracking car and is one of several 911's I've owned over the years, but I'm after something a little more, well, GT orientated, but it must be able to seat all of the family members. Thought I'd got there with an XKR previously but was kidding myself...... Had isofix in the back and my little boy loved it, but my wife was more than scrunched up in the front when all three of us were in the car.

As I have grown up a little (on paper anyway) I have started to fancy a bit of Italian finery more and more. GT/GTS seems to be the logical conclusion.

I'll post up a few queries tomorrow when I'm back at my PC!

Cheers

I would keep the runaround.....i have a brabus roadster for town and it still puts a smile on my face, not as much as the maserati but around town its enough......

Good to hear all the comments about keeping a daily driver/run-around as well as the GT/GTS when I take things forward. Sorry about the long post below but all sets the scene.....

The current fleet consists of the C4S, Focus ST, Audi A4 Avant and Porsche 944 S2. The mix has come into existence over the last 18 months and really needs sorting out as the Audi gets consigned to the drive for the vast majority of the time and my wife nicks the Focus all too often with me running up and down the A24 to the office in the S2. The C4S being the weekend car that again in reality doesn't get used as it should. The two Porsches and most pertinently the Focus love a drink!

The Audi is going to go in the very near future so removes that part of the problem but the C4S whilst being a joy to drive isn't really suitable to use as a family car, is 10 years old next Winter (thereby outside Porsche warranty protection) and just doesn't get used enough. It also doesn't deliver the sense of occasion that I used to experience when I was a bit younger.

The plan is that the S2 will be kept as the alternative to the GT/GTS – it only has 50k miles on the clock and is in top condition. The thirsty Focus will be swapped for something less sporty but more family orientated, possibly a new Focus 1.6 Eco boost – I can't get excited about the family motor that my wife will use day to day.

Cutting the cost of running, insuring and taxing the family mile eater also provides part of the justification for diving into the Maserati, although, of course, there are still huge lashings of male logic too!

If the GT really grabs me I can see the S2 being chopped for something a bit more sensible too.

The main logic behind changing things around is on the one hand make our average mile driven a little less costly (in petrol terms) plus get into something that we will feel is truly exotic , with the effect on the eye probably being more important that out and out performance. Losing the ST will easily sort the first point even with the Maserati being thirstier than the C4S and with A GT on board I personally think, from the majority of angles, we will have bought one of the loveliest cars money can buy at or around £100k.

This brings us nicely on to budget. I'm planning on around £60k for a GT which should get me a late low mileage 2008 possibly even 2009 car from a main dealer. What I haven't decided yet is whether I should push a bit further on the budget front and look for an early S automatic. I drove a GT back in 2007 although can't remember too much about it but have never driven the ‘S'. I'm not fussed by having the extra grunt for a few grand extra but I do keep reading that the sport mode induced exhaust noise on the ‘S' is captivating. That may be my undoing!

The other main things I need to get myself comfortable with are...

Being able to get the golf clubs in the boot (mundane I know).

Whether there are any Maserati Specialists closer to me than the nearest main dealer, Meridien Modena in Lyndhurst, which is a 60 mile drive ( I can probably get over this, but it is a fair distance just to get a niggle ‘checked out' and I've always been used to having local expertise for my Porsches).

I'd also be interested on peoples' views as to whether these cars have any sort of Achilles heel. I spend far too much time considering the possibility of the C4S' engine letting go when it eventually gets outside warranty! Mind you I'll probably spend as much over a few years on Maserati wear and tear and routine servicing

:broke:.

And no, I won't even bother asking about the running costs because if I did I'd probably talk myself out of buying one!

I'd just like to add that there are some really informative posts on the Forum about ownership experience and I know we are all biased about makes that we are fond of – it's all quite refreshing.

Hi Paul,

Your fulsome and measured consideration of your needs and car choice are to be applauded.

2. Running costs maybe not the biggest thing at moment...more like depreciation.

3. To date noone coming on and saying they had lots of probs or one item giving up early...quality seems built in!

4. No idea about golf clubs.

5. You could consider a cheaper older model/low mileage....go for the forums ECU up-grade....50 more BHP...not expensive.

6. They aren't great when you go beyond 8/10ths driving according to a recent report.....but remember a GT....not an out and out sportscar!

7. Brakes aren't great.....if again you are a spriited driver

8 Yup...the exhaust or up-rated larini after market systems make a noise to die for!

Paul, glad we got you registered finally, I am Matt and am the admin on here, the guy you were emailing.

I see you only live down the road from me, shame I do not have the GS anymore (sold it a few weeks ago) otherwise I would have taken you out for a spin.

The Maserati thing will get under your skin I am afraid if you go down that route, its a really beaut of a car, and if you are looking at Granturismos, and your coming from a 911 background you really want to get the 4.7s with MC shift paddle gearbox. The regular 4.2 is ok, but its not raw like the S. Ok it cost a fair bit more, but you will get it back at the end as they are very well regarded, where the 4.2 is a little too shall we say, 4 seater for the keaner drivers taste. The Granturismo is a very heavy car so the uprated engine and especially the brakes are very welcome benefits.

All the best, and fire away at with any questions.

Thanks for sorting out registration yesterday.

Are you planning on returning to another Maserati having moved on from your GS?

Who did you use to look after the car as it doesn't seem A's though there are any specialists around this part of the country?

I'm trying hard not to look toward the GTS but wouldn't be surprised if that's where I end up. Keeping an open mind for the time being though. Slight frustration for me is that I've just had a minor op. and am about a week away from being able to drive again otherwise I'd be off down to Meridien to try them both out back to back.

Certainly be interested in hearing the views of anyone on here who has owned both.

Hi Paul, the only foible I've heard about to date is that the GT / GT-S's seem to get through front tyres at a rate of knots. Usual thing - inner edges.

I've not noticed this, I'll have proper look later if as you say it's the inner edges.
I've done 6,400 miles now and at a glance the fronts look fine, the rears on the other hand are going to need replacing pretty soon.

This is food for thought - 4.2 GT with DMS and Larini back boxes could be an option. After research though by the time you have upgraded the brakes you are possibly looking at £4-5k on top of purchase at least.

That said it widens the choice of cars - and I'll no doubt be picky about colour. Want to try and avoid Silver and greys which leaves me keen on Nero or strangely red which I have never had down as a Maserati colour.

Do Larini do a system that gives control over the valves, as on the 'S'?

Also what's the Maserati warranty like with aftermarket mods? I suspect DMS would invalidate (but probably invisible) but Larini/brakes will be obvious.

Paul I use Mike Roberts up in Fareham, he is now going under the name Maserati Shed, and that probably describes him very well. He charges about £40 an hour for Maserati work and is highly regarded. He works from his house, but has all his own kit Inc SD2/3.

Don't expect prestine premises with a dolly bird on the desk, but his work speaks for itself.

I will be going for either a GTS but I also have a deposit down on the upcoming Alfa 4c GTA, but I might just sell that one straight on as it might be a bit too small and uncompromising for me, but we will see. The GTS by the end of this year is favourite still, just waiting for them to hit the right price.

Thanks Matt

That's helpful.

Alfa 4c will I'm sure help the GTS fund along if you flip it straight away.

I'm currently back to thinking of a standard GT with map and Larini toys. I'm not convinced that 's' prices will dip to extent I'd like. I'm trying to find out stats on how many were sold 2008 early 2009. I've got a horrible feeling they won't be as plentiful as 2007/early 2008 Standard cars and therefore might hold up rather well.

Things starting to snowball for me though and have been chatting to a few people about moving my C4S on - if I hold out beyond the end of May it'll be a miracle - no will power!!

Cheers

Paul
