Gees what a mess...shame for the owner it didn't happen at somewhere south of 100mph! That must have been some gut wrenching wincing noise at that speed. It hurts just thinking about it.

I killed a Bedford Midi engine and gearbox in one go once. Emptied the whole lot on the bottom of the Stevenage South A1M slip road. Nice 20 secs of big bang followed by lots of bits hitting the underside of the van followed by black rear screen. On the midi the engine was in the front next to you so made me jump a bit!

Worst driving experience of my life, Northampton to Manchester and back in a Bedford midi with a stuck up window in July, got back boiled like a pig and deaf in one ear , hateful things no wonder they went under , the only thing worse was a Bedford rascal

Stupid question but what happens when the engine seizes at 100mph? Presumably the effect is like changing into 1st at high speed with massive engine braking - in a manual you'd instinctively floor the clutch to disengage - does the GS software do the same? At least it is RWD so the front wheels wouldn't lock up.

I've never driven a Rascal but they always seem to be driven with considerable zizz in and out of the traffic, living up to their name. I seem to recall that Stirling Moss had one with a scooter in the back as his solution to London traffic.

Glad you had the pleasure of a Midi as well. Nice column shift gearbox!

It wasn't my worst drive though...a Leyland DAF stole that crown. Cheshunt to Birmingham to collect some glass from a Pilkington factory & back. Man that was loud....louder than Phil's GT S I reckon!! I was certain deaf at the end of that journey. What a gutless horrible noise machine that was....proper hateful thing.

Ouch!! Not sure what's more painfull the noise of that engine when it let go or the cry's of the owner when Marios slides the bill across the counter, on a noise level probably about the same

I don't know, I quite liked the Rascal. Revvy engine and a really short gear shift. I learned to drive in one and if you got the rear axle hopping it neutralised the understeer. My dad still has a haunted look when I talk about those driving lessons... :)

I had a fairly spectacular blow up in an Isuzu Piazza Turbo back in the early 90s, (which had what was basically a turbo charged Bedford midi engine). It let go big time at speed and I got a whole windscreen covered with emulsified oil in a matter of seconds. Not a great car, but interesting handling and with an lsd as standard, spent a fair bit of time sideways.
