Energy crisis

I am beginning to think that high en prices are how the government are going to achieve net zero by 2050.
  • so expensive the general public can’t afford it and use as little as possible / produce their own
  • so expensive that manufacturers (those nasty carbon producers) can’t afford it so go out of business and stop producing carbon.

As @MarkMas said, it can't be a coincidence that every single person who confuses causation with correlation winds up dead.

I’m pretty sure that Putin isn’t a secret member of Greenpeace, so it’s probably an unintended consequence.

Not a conspiracy, for sure, but we may look back on this energy price drama as when we started taking reducing consumption seriously, a bit like the response to the oil price hikes in the 1970s.

I have a 4kw system and get up to 500kw per month in summer but a bad winter’s month might only be 50kw. I don’t have a battery - not sure they were around 13 years ago when I installed mine - but at 14kw you would need a lot of Tesla Powerbanks and/or a load more panels to make it work especially as your winter usage might be twice your summer demand. I have an air source heat pump as well. Might be worth a thought but only if you don’t need 60c.

Thanks for the insights. Really helpful! There is just too much info but I’ve no idea what I need to know…

what I can say is that over the past year, I have used the following average per day and per night,,,,
  • Day: 19kwh (570 per month)
  • night: 3.6kwh (110 per month)

My garage roof has no obstructions and is south facing and has a maximum south facing roof size of 25m2

Any idea on what I need??? Also happy to get a battery if that helps also

As I've said before, as many panels as you can. You will be limited by the available area and how the panels can be arranged.
I would say you would probably manage a typical 4kw system, maybe a little more.
You just need to speak to an installer who will measure the roof, and layout the panels in a quote.
Our typical usage daily was 18kwh throughout the year. Not much difference between the seasons because we use electric in the summer for cooking, and gas in the winter. Typically over the last 3 months we have had our system our draw from the grid has dropped to 6kwh with no battery.
This will obviously rise in the winter months.

No such thing as reasonable costs any more!
Which is why he is holding off as he won’t pass the cost on too customers. He is looking at an aluminium company to make the frames he needs. He can get the panels no issue but can’t buy the stuff to mount them. It is jock land mind.

Live on my own, hardly in, I got told my new rate fixed will be £280 pm
Upto now I was paying £75 for both electric and gas
Time is coming closer to moving out and renting the house I feel……
That has to be wrong. Surely. It’s gone up 80%. So you should be around £135.
My daughter was told she had to double hers. House is sold and she hasn’t been in it for 4 months and they won’t pay her back what she has in credit until they get the final readings when it goes through. I was sat listening while she was on phone. Told her to put it on speaker and just said tell them you’re cancelling the direct debit.

Okay 80% from the present cap, many, like us, were on deals and not caps but the deals have ended.
This time last year gas 2p now to be 15p, x7.5 increase.
Electricity 12p now to be 52p, x4.3 increase.

They are the true increases for most.
Hence the £75 to £280 increase

FL state battery fee $1.50 then can shove that considering the amount they will be making on the battery even before the labour charge.

EV definately the way to go when the battery is dead at 70k miles.
:beat_brick::frusty6:

Seems you can buy a new chevy volt for less than the cost to replace the battery if it proves to be a legit quote.

Petrol engines fail at lower miles if abused, so not sure its a reason to throw the whole idea out. As you rightly point out, its the posting of some internet folklore, which isn't especially helpful :)

Talking of conspiracies didn't Stanley Myer do something amazing in the 70's with his invention to combat high fuel prices? Got him murdered as legend has it.

Aluminium frames? Surely they’re 3-4 times the cost of steel?

Wholesale power has gone up 600% in a year gas almost the same.
Forward price curves suggest that power will be £1 per kWh like your Danish pals very soon.

Ordered from Amazon a smart plug with energy monitoring.
Initially went around checking what certain appliances are using.
Our 10 year old 50" FHD LG plasma was a target, but actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be at 150w.
However with the media centre switched on with all the sat boxes, amazon TV, dvd players etc another 50w. Switch on the onkyo surround sound however, another 150w...
Next was our lads bedroom.
I knew this would be bad.
Xbox and our old Panasonic 40" plasma from 20 years ago. 400w.
Last, and probably the biggest shock, our old fridge freezer down in our store from our first house 25 years ago.
After 18 hours of monitoring it is bang on for 2 kwh a day, to keep some beers cold.
That is immediately getting decommissioned!

So we can immediately save 15% of our annual electricity usage by having warm beer, and another 5% by getting a newer telly. So a saving of approx £600 a year at the October cap, and probably £1,000 at the January cap, without doing anything else.

Awesome. Will use as excuse to upgrade the old panasonic plasma in the kids playroom
