Energy crisis

I’m looking at this now. Will
Use my 3.5kw array to heat water in an immersion heater before we use gas. That way the company I give electric away too can’t make the 1000% profit on my export. It’s shocking that those of us encouraged to go green and supply power get nothing in return when the prices go up. If you are just starting now there is absolutely no incentive to put panels on your house. Thank goodness ours were already bought and paid for.
About to install battery storage to mop up excess PV kWh during the day as it too pains me to push kWh to the grid for 1/10 b***er all. I will also look at topping up battery with off peak grid to smooth usage too.

The dishwasher uses less water than a sink and, if you make use of the whole dinner service, only need it on a few times a week.

Out of interest how much is the battery. 10k?

Only had our PV 3 months 6.4kw, but seriously looking at the battery now.
£4.5k should buy us a BYD 8 kWh battery, plug and play with our system.
Haven't got the paperwork for SEG payments yet but with the current prices our export is powering our neighbours for free, but they are paying for it...

Exactly. I want to get to a point where I’m exporting as little as possible but still being paid to use it.

We wash ip
Once a day. I know people who use a dishwasher every day and it’s on for 2 hours. Can’t be cheap if the dishwasher is heating the water as it’s cheaper to heat water via gas as it is. You’ll be ok as you will wash up once a week and throw the takeaway cartons out on same day. Haha.

When the war in Ukraine ends. Countries directly affected by the sharp rise in commodity prices and who directly supported Ukraine with materiel and military training, ought to be able to obtain reparations from Russia.
Russia can afford to pay reparations, because it is mineral rich.
We can't impose this by force obviously. But we can isolate Russia for as long as it takes to pay reparations sanctioned by the United Nations. As Russia is in effect, a kleptocracy. We ought to keep all of the wealth that we have seized and keep on seizing assets that are found in the UK and it's overseas territories. Including all the tax havens.
Russia ought to be ejected from the UN Security Council. This would put China on notice, regarding Taiwan.
Such measures might trigger a coup in Russia and end Putin's reign.

Speaking of China. China was the source of the 2020/21global pandemic. It continues to be the source of new strains of Covid. China is pursuing an aggressive strategy in the South China Sea, not unlike Japan in the late 1930's.
It is ignoring the International Treaties that it does not like and having destroyed the human rights of Tibetans, is now doing the same to the Uyghurs. Who will be next? China ought to be treated the same way as Russia. Until they can demonstrate that they fully adopt the principles of the U.N. It ought to be made to pay reparations for Covid, in the same way as Russia.

We could use such reparations to improve our infrastructure, including roads, rail, airports and ports. The NHS and education. We could finally start to close the attainment gap between north and south. Reform our civil services to eliminate the criminal amounts of waste, annually. We need to and can become energy independent. Around 50% of our energy comes from renewables already. Unfortunately 35% comes from LNG and 15% from nuclear.

I realise what I've written sounds utopian and naive. As a species, I don't believe that we can continue, as we do now.

A lot of what you have said makes total sense. My thoughts on Russia are maybe a bit extreme as I think us in the west have been weak in our response. Should have took the bully on full frontal.

Ok stupid question and happy for the flame throwing,,,,, but is my understanding correct that the “current” price cap on electricity (ie the max amount our leccy suppliers can charge) is approx 28p per KWH during the day if on DD and standard variable rate?????

I have just delved deeper into the murky waters of my E-on statement and found that my rate from the 1st April was increased to 34.18p per KWH….

Before I go all Martin Lewis on this, can someone pls confirm that they can indeed give me this rate and if yes, what is the energy price cap??

Yes, but the cap only applies to standard variable tariffs. If you have a fixed rate tariff it doesn’t apply, but it would be mad for it to be higher.

I am in the standard variable tarrif for E-on so how come it is more than the 28p per KWH?

Any ideas?

The price cap is presently 28p going up to 51p per kWh form 1st October. Not sure what your package is but the price cap is usually the cheapest unless you managed to fix it at some long term deal before all this sh!t happened.

Away from the figures just now but from memory the options were ~5-8k for 6-9kWh Li, inverter and s/w. It is part of a crowd purchase in Wilts. I estimate conservatively that we would harvest ~3kWh pd and shift maybe 2kWh out of low tariff giving a saving of around £2.00 pd. This would require us to serialise usage so as not to pull amps from the grid unnecessarily. Will depend upon how clever the kit is.
