Eliminating car ownership - seriously?

The first thing I thought was that is ridiculous.

Then I saw that the transport minister said that people would share bikes.

As most cyclists will tell you, there's absolutely zero chance of a cyclist sharing their bike with anyone.
Even less than a motorist!

Just shows how out of touch politicians are these days!

Um, I think this might be what she means by bike sharing...

I think some of our politicians are on cuckcoo land...

This sounds mad to us old geezers with our treasured roary motors, but by way of example, my two sons, both in their twenties, see no point at all in owning a car. They use public transport, Uber etc, to get around and when they need to go further or take a complex journey they use a car-sharing service or hire a car or van. Now, they do both live in cites, which helps for sure, but if you do the maths, for many people owning a whole car is a stupid and expensive option, however psychologically appealing it might be, or however nice a Maserati is to drive.

This I'm afraid is the way its going. I'd also say that the majority of under 30's I know have a similiar opinion, whether it's good or bad I have no idea but I will be keeping my cars until I depart even if its too expensive to drive them!

Also, remember that even now a huge number of people don't 'own' their cars - PCP's etc, is just another form of rental

She is not a Minister - she is Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Transport (DfT) and quite often these are unpaid roles...

That'll be handy living in a village 10 miles from any shops, no bus route and uphill in any direction back home. Fckwits.
Why not deal with all the dirty shipping, industry and deforestation first... oh but no that is far too difficult and political. Fckwits.

That feels a bit alarmist to me. If I lived in a city, I’d seriously consider joining one of those car share schemes instead of having a run about. I know a few that do it, as they have no interest is cars as a hobby and it seems to work for them.

The upside to higher utilisation of vehicles for mundane motoring is more spaces to park for those of us who actually like cars.

This article seems to suggest that moving away from ownership where it suits will suddenly mean those of us who live out of town have to walk, which is patently not the case.

SK is doing a splendid job at banning cars by stealth in London. Last week I took 4 hours to drive to Wandsworth! A massive 18 miles… I used to be able to get there in 90 mins at rush hour! I got back in 3 1/2 though.

I'm not surprised. SK is a massive Khant.

Somebody told me one of their friends was an area manager for a ford dealership , he'd been to a conference in the US where Ford said they don't expect to be retailing cars at all in the future

When the electric self driving car is commonplace cars will just be parked up being charged , you'll get in one and it'll take you where you want to go paid for on an app.

It's the only way the electric car will work in the US , drive to the limit of the battery then change the horses , sorry car , while it charges up for the next user

Driving for the general public is coming to an end , those cars that are still running will eventually be killed by E10 fuel, then what E15 - E20

It'll also make the HST unnecessary by the time it's built , 4 return tickets at what £300 each or 4 people jump in a car and be driven there for much less .

Look how many cars there are on the road and how many have one person in them , it can't carry on like this , something has to change , it's not going to be bike riding though.

7½ hours to do 36 miles , how does that not drive you nuts , I get ****** off if somebody is buying a coffee blocking a pump in the petrol station.

If they're banning cars by stealth it can't be working if there's that many cars on the road

The next thing these politicians would come up with is to share houses as a solution for housing crisis!

Well for me a car is a guilty pleasure I enjoy spending my hard earned on and like a few of us I have several and won't be changing my ways until I'm in a wooden box.
We'll likely all be in a wooden box before it's forced on use but it's definitely coming , especially when all the manual labour jobs have been robotised

Living in Putney and while I love my car if it is to head towards central London I would take my bike or bicycle. The only exception is an early Sunday drive. In a city like London a car is next to useless to cover any meaningful distance.
