Do you get what you pay for with servicing?

One a QPV, I've had quotes for services from £800 up to £2,800 (McGrath).

As I'm based in Cambridge, McGrath will be my closest Maserati specialist, but considering they are double the average quote I've had it's difficult to know what I'm paying for.

I understand this forum is owned by Sports Italia.

It would be good to get an understanding of what I should be paying for the major service on a QPV and what type of garage I should be aiming for.

Thanks

I can vouch for McGraths…..yes they are a bit more expensive but they are OCD when it comes to maintenance…..would be good to know what service? I assume Service 4 the big one?

Ask for a breakdown of the cost as I'm betting the lower price is a lube service of the engine.
The higher prices all fluids on the car.
Plus you want a diagnostic check too.

Bigger service as in 4 year or 8 year? As Phil says, there is a lot of ground to cover and without a breakdown you’ll be guessing.

Just to be clear, the forum predated SI by 10 years and is operated separately.

There are a few other members who are around Cambridge so hopefully they will chime in with their suggestions.

I suppose eventually this topic would be raised and in all fairness rightly so.

To give some background with the aim of being transparent:

This forum came about in 2010 due to the incumbent of the old forum treating ‘the troops’ badly and only being interested in his own goals and objectives. I hasten to add, Gav, the creator of said forum was a stand up guy and did it for his passion of the marque. It’s just a shame he sold it.

So in 2010, me being a web developer was approached by several of the core members with the aim of setting up our own forum where we would not be constrained.

It took off and flew. I spent many years doing ‘how to’ threads, with others with the soul aim to help owners and keep those cars running cost effectively.

I always said I would never charge for membership.

In 2019, an opportunity with Ashley, a recognised and very experienced main dealer tech arose. I did not go looking for it but after 25 years of graphic design I was bored and had got myself to a position I could retire (48). My main client was 70 and going to call it a day plus Trev my longtime trusted coder wished to move to a new challenge….the stars all sort of aligned so I went for it.

This all happened in a 3 week period so things moved fast.

For me, it was never about the money, it was about the Maserati community and my wish to use my engineering qualification for the first time.

I found myself springing out of bed in the mornings and just loved working on the cars. A mid life crisis some would say, for me it was realising a dream.

So, the forum members got the ridiculous £59 per hour rate with a team keen to do it right.

Back in 2019 the Maserati service options and network was crumbling. Main dealers were closing down and only a handful of dedicated specialists left to carry on the cause.

Nearly all those specialists still sponsor this forum which speaks volumes plus we all realised there is enough work out there for everyone.

The specialist network, breakers and parts suppliers all talk on a regular basis. I would say Mike Roberts, David Askew, Marios, Dicky, Shiltech and Voicey are a close knit bunch (sorry if I missed a few). We understand if we help each other the job becomes an easier one.

From a SportsItalia perspective yes, the forum and workshop are linked by me but operate as two separate entities. There is also the fact that this means all Sportsitalia work is laid bare on this forum with nothing hide.

So yes, support the specialist network, if you don’t you will lose it and then be forced back to the main dealer network.

So to summarise, nobody on here should feel obliged to use Sportsitalia or any other specialist for that matter, just make sure you use and support one of them that best suits you and keep the network going.

I sort of got sidetracked there so in answer to the original question:

Bi annual service at years 2/6/10/14…..
4 year major at years 4/8/12/16…..

QP/GT bi annual (SI £795 plus vat):
Oil (Shell 5w40 fully synth)
Oil filter (OEM)
Air filter (OEM)
PAS fluid
Coolant
Brake fluid full bleed
Washer fluid
Cabin filter (OEM)
F1 Gear or Auto diff oil
Aux belt
Stretch belt (OEM)
Inspection
Code read/clear
Silicone windows
Silicone seat belts
Grease doors, boot and bonnet hinges/catches
Align centre caps
Valet

Major 4 year (£1395 plus vat) as above plus
Spark plugs (NKG OEM)
Carbon canister filter (OEM)
AC regas

The major is supposed to have all 4 lambdas replaced which we do not do and recommend this at 12 years or 70k miles (£595 plus vat)

I very much doubt you will get better value than the Sportsitalia prices anywhere myself.
If you live near Southampton you are very lucky.
I know General Garages charging more per hour to work on the average stuff on the streets.
Well Done to Matt and Team.

Being in Cambridge, you have Barr Tech that are specialists. I have used them to look after my Grancabrio since I got it. They are excellent to deal with. Highly recommend.

I’d factor in the low servicing cost, high confidence that the right work is being done in the right way, balanced by the extra effort that might be incurred by getting your car to someone like SI.

Pretty sure it’s a good investment of time that will be financially prudent in the short and long run.

As I tried to explain for £800 it will be oil and filter if you want screen wash it will be £825 and on we go upwards.
I've seen it first hand having been on the coal face Andy.

Yep get that Phil….The way I read Alex’s post is the quote from 800 to 2800 is for the same service though or am I wrong as for example a 5th year service is a 5th year service no matter where you go unless of course some are cutting corners….

If so was lucky enough to have one of these cars again I really do not think I would trust anyone except Matt and the team to look after it.

Didn't realise it at the time, Matt, but I must have been one of your earliest customers/supporter. There I was, in a Bristol car park, with what appeared to be the onset of Variator rattle, listening to the quiet reassurance over the phone, patience and generosity for opening up the workshop at 10 pm to receive her on the low loader. Answer me this. Is it wonder that I go nowhere else?

Yep, all of the quotes were for the major service.
