Covered registration plates when selling?

Criminals, by their nature, are lazy gits because they don’t want to work for money. This means they’d rather just look on the internet for a model of the colour and rough year of a plate they want to clone to avoid speeding/parking fines. They can’t even be bothered to go and look for one out and about, far too much effort.

Probably not much of an issue with Maseratis though as they tend not to drive about in those.

When selling on the web you’ve got a nicely indexed, searchable source of finding the exact match for a clone (make, model, colour, year and spec). I don’t mind my plate appearing randomly on the web but would be reluctant to share it in sale pics if it was a common car. Nothing to do with mot history or HPI checks. I’d share with any interested buyers however

Nothing wrong with hiding the plate
Not suspicious at all when I see them

I too have done and will do again
People clone reg from advert and then you receive fines etc also i withhold it for another reason…..to get people to call me, from my sales experience I’ll test them and see how serious they are re the car and will gladly hand it over, nothing to hide

I have often wondered if having a personalised plate gives some protection against cloning ?
After all they tend make the car standout from the crowd.

Several years ago I sent the Wee Woman’s Busso Lusso to valet parking at LHR. A few weeks later a letter came from Thames Valley police asking us what we knew about our personalised car reg being seen somewhere in West London. I was asked not to contact the parking people and heard no more. Nothing amiss with the car though.

Re cloned plates, from what I have been told, they are able to correlate ANPR locations into suspected cloned plate activity.

Of course, this assumes the car that has its plates cloned is used regularly enough for it to trigger this.

I honestly expect the rider: "If they are looking" on that. I totally don't believe it happens automagically for a number of reasons

I'm referring to certain things that should remain as no work was carried out....hashtag friendly tester.
I was a friendly tester but never went against the MOT Manual even if I disagreed with it.
Advisory notes are there for a reason and hopefully the car owner deals with them and they disappear on the next test.

Nothing to hide other than the obvious, stops people cloning them, and fraudulent use of reg plates. I’ve never once shown the reg in advert, but always happy to hand it over to anyone enquiring.
Always amuses me when the answer is so simple!

I would say yes. Any prospecting crim would think too risky and move onto the next…loads to choose from.

I would hope that the DVLA I would be looking for ANPR duplicates too close in time for the distance apart for real and clones.
Don't know how ANPR is programmed these days. However, what I suspect, is that any info it produces that 'does not compute' as it were. May be fed to the PNC (Police National Computer) so that the next time the car is involved in illegal activity and stopped. The occupants may be held for questioning and/or the car seized, or......depending on the severity of what is held on the PNC.
It's not only ANPR that criminals have to be wary of. Let's just say that the civilian police aren't the only agency interested in your movements, if you're a person of interest. The latter being a critical point. Or, you're known to be an associate of persons of interest.
These 'other' agencies have observation coverage that is many times more comprehensive than ANPR.

From experience, I would add. That as a criminal. The last thing you want. Is to stand out and attract attention. Morons aside, obvs.
Police generally have a curious nature and when they see or hear something odd, unusual or that 'does not compute' will either act on it or file it away or record it in their PDA, to be investigated back at base.
A significant proportion of arrests of 'on the run' (OTR) criminals will take place because of something unusual about their habits, appearance, voice, associates etc etc.

You're a known wrong 'un so no wonder you say it's a perfectly legitimate practice.

I bet you also file off the VIN too to protect the car's identity. You can't be too careful.

I'm the same. See no point or value advertising the plate publicly for everyone and anyone to use as they desire. More than happy to give it to anyone who asks.

I can see why they are masked though to prevent easy cloning etc. which is why I have chosen to mask my plate in ad often.

I used to mask them and sometimes do but when I've taken a stack of pics I'm not sure I can justify the time to edit each pic. Especially when I'm selling it and hope to sell soon anyway.

I don't have an opinion either way to anyone selling if they do mask a plate or dont. It doesn't bias my decision to be interested in it or not either way. Happy for anyone to do whatever they want for whatever reason they want. It doesn't really bother me either way.

Have you learned absolutely NOTHING about the interwebs? You are supposed to form the worst possible opinion, with the least amount of critical thinking, in the quickest possible time...on literally EVERYTHING. We are going to have to revoke your access to the world wide web if you keep being sensible, fair, evenhanded, and nice.

LOL....I have learned.....just haven't or can't easily adjust my behaviour accordingly
