Couple of very basic questions from a 4200 newbie

I'm going to organise a viewing on a 4200 CC and just so I don't sound dumb to the dealer :)

How do you pronounce 4200? eg four thousand two hundred, forty two hundred, four two double 0, etc?
Can they take high miles? It's got 80k on now and I'll be putting 15k on annually, so well over 100k when I come to sell.
When the clutch is at say 40%, does that mean 40% left or 40% worn? And how long on average do they last?
On a few I've seen pictures of the windows switches look like the black paint is coming away. Is that normal?

Sure to be many more questions after I've viewed :)

Ahhh...you'll not sound dumb, as he probably knows as much as you do unless he's a Maserati specialist. I went to see cars at indies and I knew more than they did, and I don't actually know that much myself!

Pronounciation - I've always called them fortytwo hundred or four two hundred.....don't matter what you call them really
High miles - the guys on here will tell you that the engines can take high miles. There are a few members on here whose cars have done well over 80k and still running sweetly. In fact, the more you use them the better they run. However, Maseratis are very mileage sensitive, so the more you put on them, the harder it is to sell etc
Clutch - can mean either but I'd read it as 40% left. Depending on how you use the gearbox, how you drive it, where you drive it etc will determine how long they last. Driven properly and not in stop/start traffic, you should easily see between 25/30k out of a cluth
Sticky switches are a problem for all of us, I have the same issue in my GS. There are solutions, such as replacing the switches or just cleaning them but then you're left with the rubber feeling on the switch..

Good luck with the viewing buddy

I have always said forty two hundred.

Interestingly Maserati only ever called it the Coupe - GT or CC.

I'd suggest that the best cars are usually known within the forum and it would be a good idea to let us have some further info on the actual car. Buying well is key and if you buy one that's known, it should (although not guaranteed to) get you into a better machine. Don't assume that if it is known, it's therefore a peach, but you should have better odds than a totally unknown car.

By the best you can afford, it's unwise to try to save on these kind of cars at the front end.

I say forty two hundred.
Mine has done just over 80k, in fact I've done 2.5k in the two months I've had it!
I'm guessing the engine is hardly stressed as it is a big old unit, I'd imagine it is the wear and tear items which are the likely ones to go wrong.
So if it's had all the usual wear and tear items done, you could find yourself a bargain. (I did).
Window switches. They all wear, of all the cars I saw only one didn't have any paint coming off of it. And thats because they'd been replaced!

All depends if you want to use it or look at it. (tin hat on).

If you do like the look of it then unless it is a Maserati specialist selling the car suggest you seriously consider getting an independent inspection by a known local Maserati specialist - the £250 ish could save you a fortune.

Happy hunting.

I don't know the actual car but you are looking at a car from a very reputable source with a comprehensive warranty and a car that has already been inspected. I personally would not see the need to get a further inspection done but that's just me, he only sells excellent cars.
It is priced well, has a good spec, it is a Nero car and has an X-Pipe - what's not to like?!
Good luck

Richard Grace is well respected and you will be looked after.

He is a forum sponsor on here so chances are he has read your thread so will give you a wry smile when he meets you and refer to the car as a 4 thousand, 2, double zero :)

As already said buying from Richard will give you peace of mind.
He is used to getting asked "stupid"questions so just ask!!
Only "issue" again as already said is reselling with bigger miles.
The cars can take it easily but there are many ( including on here) who will be put off by mileage. If you plan on keeping it then it isn't a factor.

Sounds like everyone knows Richard. Good to know.

What is an x-Pipe?

As there are no photo's yet does anyone have a picture of how the interior will look with the Avorio leather?

An X-pipe is a replacement/upgrade for the front middle exhaust section. It deletes the standard pipe set-up and replaces it with a set that have the appearance of an X because gases travel through the twin pipes, into a X configuration and onto the back boxes and out into the atmosphere. The benefit is a nicer sound with some crackles and pops when you downshift as well as a supposed power increase (although this will be small and really only noticeable when lots of other bits are upgraded too). It's desirable and should be seen as a plus point.

They key bit being that it is unsilenced. The factory part is also an X-pipe (as far as I know, any way), but has muffling baffles in it. Nothing like as much fun

I bought my secong 4200 from RG (and my third) which was almost identical to this one bar the lack of HID.

The face lift 4200 offers the best value of the coupe range and is also the most usable...I have had three, two 4200s and now a GS. Ifind the GS just too sport orientated and given our poor roads at times hard to enjoy to full effect.

I upgraded my one (same as this) with a GS front splitter and mesh grill as per the avatar. I also put an x pipe on but to be honest it was a waste of money unless making more noise is your bag.

Enjoy finding the right car.

Echoing all that has been said in that Richard Grace is a top man and a reputable/honest dealer. He generally only gets mid to high end examples so unlikely you will get a lemon. Also a known forum car so certainly less risk to this one.

Richard often gets all his cars checked & prep'd by Marios @ Autoshield prior to sale so make sure this has been done. You won't need an inspection if this has been done. Also it will have a decent warranty so piece of mind if any issues anyway.

Sounds like a no brainer for me...especially with the unsilenced x-pipe. Good it is a 2003 MY car as won't have that ridiculous rear aerial! Also some improvements to CC box software. Not as good as a post 2005 facelift model but these are.often much more expensive.

Go for it...you won't regret it. The sound of the V8 motor in the 4200 is not like much else & a great sound.
