Loz.....so they can make exact OEM equivalents fronts discs?

Secondly, can you drill already made discs and will they be exactly same as OEMs in effect and usage?

Thirdly, if you put on the Brembo 550 discs which are exactly(?) the same size........even though they are smooth faced, can you use the low dust pads which offset the need for drilled discs....aka....same performance and safety?

P

1) Lets wait for conaero to confirm but i think so Frank

2) Answer to that is yes grooving and drilling is possibleafter manufacture provided its done properly with the right machinery , fortunatley i have a guy down in Leighton Buzzard that will do it for £10 per item per disc

3)Again i should imagine so , after all Ferrari were doing for years, and so were Maserati on the 3200 's , early 3200's discs were plain smooth

There is not alot on the market re front discs, there are some FD's that are about the same as OEM, but I have not had any feedback as yet. I would stick with OEM, probably get a better price from Eurospares but worth checking main dealer, as sometimes they are cheaper.

Never heard of any complaints with the OEM discs.

Rs.....yes it appears the greengrippers are the replacement pads of choice.

Not progressed the front discs yet......though hopefully some movement on them next week...ie an up-date.

How urgent is your need?

Not urgent for front disks.
Got 4 replacement calipers to fit, and will add front greengrippers at same time. Might have been nice to do disks at same time.
Will just do disks when needed, and add another fresh set of pads, at that price might as well change them while I am in there.

Why are you replacing the calipers?

Yes, as pads such a good price its a less costly thing to do.

Hoping to move this on in next 2 weeks, but if it sorta falls through, might have another bite at the disc cherry in the late spring...;).....!

Calipers are "luxury item", bought at good price. Mine have dreaded Brembo "plate lift", causing brake judder because pads bind - see article. Beware if you have noticed this.

Brembo plate lift explained

Rather than have the car off the road/immobilised for weeks while I get them done or worse bugger them up myself*. I got all 4 for price similar to refurb of front only. Will have my originals done properly and keep as spare or sell on. Both from genuine Assetto Corsa, so think they will be easy to move on being read and shiny.

*Taken advice from my expert. Needs Decent snap on tool AND heat (acetylene usually) to shift the tiny mushroom headed bolt which secures the plate. Might even need to cut a slot or weld on a nut  Not impossible at home, but inconvenient when I want to get the other toy out of the garage.

Before (not my pic)
white corrosion bubbling underneath the rhs of the lower caliper plate note the awkward inclined position of the torx screws

This is the (new and shiny) plate (not my pic)

Yes heard of plate lift. I had a 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo S before buying the 3200 and it is very common on those models.

The 944 Turbo also uses Brembo calipers, with similair plates, setup to 3200/4200 and over years corrosion behind the plate causes it to lift and then causing the pad to bind in the caliper.

I am guessing as the 3200/4200 get older this will become more of a problem. They are heaps of companies do refurbs of the Brembo calipers.

RPM Porsche charge £117 per caliper for full refurb:

I have not personally used them, but during my 6 years of porsche ownership they were always highly recommneded by Porsche Club Forum members.
As you can see they are a Porsche Independant but I am sure they could sort the 3200/4200 brake calipers as very similair.

I think a lot will depend on mileage, is the vehicle stored outside inside etc. I believe it is just corrosion/reaction between different metals in the plates and the caliper body.
I am guessing the more they are used or in the elements the more likely corrosion will occur. You tend to find 944 Turbo's are doing much much bigger miles than say a 3200 or 4200.
Even the youngest of 944 Turbo's will potentially suffer with this now and the youngest are 18 years young now!!!!

Ok.....its a pity that a quality brand named braking system has this built in deficiency.

Is it common just to Brembo or other systems, or other marques?

Could happen to any of this type. As in the article I linked to, many calipers made from alloy for unsprung weight saving, but need protection where pads seat, so plates fitted.

Corrosion once started will grow, quite literally to be a problem. First symptom is brake judder, followed by hot brakes when pads bind and ride the disks. Can result in pad failure / crumbling or even backing plate coming unstuck. Listen for rattling.
Work around is possible, grind pad edges when fitting new pads.

Causes? storing car with wet brakes and wheels maybe. I always drive a bit after washing specifically to avoid brake issues (rusty disks / pads seizing on / caliper woes)

Mine likely were already affected already when i got it, but it doesn't heal itself.

I used to have a Porsche 944 and 968 and would echo LeeH's words on Porsche Specialists being able to refurb Brembo callipers.

I always took my cars to Hartech in Bolton and they must have refurbished my callipers 2/3 times (I used to average ~20k miles a year so had them done every 2 years when I needed new pads) and each time they did a very good job and wouldn't take a Porsche anywhere else. I am sure that they would refurb them via post if necessary.

I have not used Barry at Hartech, but again heard great things re his service.

I used Tech 9 in Liverpool as they are personal friends of mine and I always liked popping in to see what Techart Show cars they had in.

They also raced Lambo,s for some years, so always plenty of shiny things to oggle at!!!
