clutch vibration

Hi, New to posting but old in reading the forum. Had my 4200 clutch done and picking up high speed vibration. 180km + . The workshop told me the clutch was balanced on the bench. Can this be checked while the car is complete or must it be stripped again?

Hi Ian, Welcome to the forum. Some questions...

Is the vibration triggered by speed or RPM?
Does it happen consistently and repeatedly?
Did you have any other components replaced at the same time? Flywheel? Bearings?
Do you trust the fitter to have fitted the components correctly?

Interested to know, as it could be other drive components now out of balance rather than your clutch.

Regards, Miles.

Normally the clutch is balanced on the car using an SD2 and special bolts, timing lights etc I think? Something to do with them having to be balanced exactly with the engine and flywheel its being fitted to. I do think this could be done on the 'bench'?

A clutch can be balanced on the bench with the right equipment Nick, but you're right to say this isn't usual, as the fitment can also throw the balance even if the clutch is balanced. Many modern clutches are so well balanced when they leave the factory, that further separate balancing isn't necessary. As far as I'm aware the SD program is a process to 'mate' the new clutch and its fitment to the flywheel, rather than to balance the clutch itself. The engagement of the clutch to the flywheel is random so it's a case of matching both components to within defined rotational parameters.

You do not have to drive at high speed to feel Clutch UNbalance.
In neutral reving at a constant rpm, unbalance can be felt easily at higher rpms.
Balancing is done withe the torquetube and bellhousing deleted, exhaust mounted.
Quite a job to be honest.

Sounds obvious but have you checked your wheel bolts, possibly lost a wheel weight; no real problem getting all the wheels reballanced, it may just elliminate them as a cause...

I took my car back to the workshop that did the clutch They are stripping again Ang checking the clutch and flywheel balance Do they have to balance the driveshaft on the car? And if so how ?

Ian, you did the right thing, dont be fobbed off.

You can get balance issues with the prop so hopefully it will be simple fix.

Ah, a second SA member. Never been to Bela Bela, almost in Botswana. Hope you manage to get the clutch sorted. There can't be many Maserati specialists in your neck of the woods.
