Water works just fine, in fact better than detailing spray as you can use more.

Wash the car and also have a bucket too, as they say, the wetter, the better!

As an alternative to lube you can as Frank says just use slightly soapy water, if you are new to claying I would say use lube at least until you are experienced in the art.

Seriously though keep to small areas and 'listen' to it... The first few passes will rasp and then it will get easier, this is the clay working, all that debris is now either in the lube or stuck in the clay, lift it off and check it carefully, change the lube and nead the clay, re-lube and go again.

Yes, straight lines Andy. I go over the same part of the panel north/south and then east/west for best results. Keep the area you're working on relatively small - 1 to 2 sq ft and use loads of lube. Keep some microfibres close by to check progress and wipe any drips/runs from the bodywork.

No pressure Andy; I mean don't put any pressure on the clay, just the weight of your hand is enough, if there is a really stubborn particle stuck on the paint like an iron fileing, it may actually mark the clay with a slice, don't press to make it work just go with lots of passes and in different directions. Straight lines yes but following the panel, go over lenses, badges, glass and even shiney plastics... You can pinch the clay to a point to get into those annoying holes in scripts and around the side repeaters etc.

Brilliant idea Newton, when and where..?? How about a Maser weekend at a nice hotel mid country, with an afternoon, or morning doing the class with a glass of champers..??

Brunty....Get a stand up Newton....

No need for a cardboard cut out me I'm sure Andy or my legs are working at the moment or "This Irish fella walks into a bar; OUCH!"

Brunty was bonkers last year Andy, we didn't get a moment that would have been suitable. I'm liking Roberts suggestion, a spa for the ladies perhaps!

Looked after and never dropped one bar should last you many years, I used to reckon on getting about 30 cars done from one piece, probably about 20 for the top panels then keeping it to the bumpers, wheels and cills for the last 10 and using a fresher piece on the tops!
