Brexit Deal

Getting stuff from the UK to Ireland has now almost become cost prohibitive, the delivery charge and fees are up significantly and delivery times are out of the window. Anything under £20 Amazon will remove the Vat and still ship for free it is available for Prime but average delivery time is 4 weeks, Irish revenue have stated they won't charge VAT on anything under £22.00 as the paperwork is not worth the revenue, this means small items are cheaper just take longer to arrive. Over £20 then the Irish revenue charge their VAT & Import duty. Other smaller suppliers just get the courier to hold a OTT deposit to cover duties then they will pay the difference back, just the deposit especially on smaller stuff is almost the price of the goods and you don't know actual price until it arrives. Car parts less of an issue just source from the EU which is pretty easy if your cars are Italian.

And on the subject of importing cars from the UK the Irish revenue has decided to put 10% import duty plus 23% Vat on the purchase price which makes sense on new cars but used cars will have already had EU Vat charged on them so charging again is double tax. The VAT is being challenged so will just have to wait until a judgement comes out on that as it sounds wrong. Obviously Irish VRT is in addition to these charges which is still only £200 if over 30 years old.

There's a story on one of the news sites about a girl who ordered a coat from the EU , can't remember which country
The £200 coat came with £73 worth of duty, vat ,courier surcharge
She refused it , then said she'd never buy anything from Europe again , all the remainers are waving their burning torches but surely not buying EU goods can only be good for the UK

If there are any shops left after the pandemic is over

Yeah the problem is, we won’t be not buying goods from the EU, we’ll just be paying more for them. Even if we wanted to, the UK manufacturing industry isn’t big enough to provide us with enough coats, or wine, or brie from your local dairy farm or about a million other things we don’t produce enough of to feed the demand..

Yet , I'm sure the manufacturers that are still making products in the UK would welcome the challenge

And isn’t that half the point, but locally again, boost your local economy, folks will see holes and decide to try and build businesses. And go back to not having lettuce in December. Seasons seem to have disappeared under globalization.

Business isn’t build based on demand it’s built based on profit. So you can have seasonal locally grown veg but it’ll cost more too. The UK isn’t big enough to be self sustainable so we’ll still need to import some stuff, which as we know now costs more.

All of this is besides the point though, I want strawberries when I want strawberries, not when my local farm grows them, or when there’s no one to pick them as the labour isn’t here.

I want bananas and dates and clementines. I want German made washing machines and Italian made cars and American sports and French wine and... Swedish Paul’s because they are better, not because they aren’t British.

But this is what’s wrong with society. I want it and I want it now. And I want it cheap.

Absolutely spot on and that is why we're in the mess that we are.
In my profession I see it all the time with tools especially with the yoof of today.
Spend ££££ on a pair of trainers still made in China but only want to spend £ on tools to earn their living.

Trainers made in China looks better on Instagram don’t they though ?

Lots of Brexit negativity on here, so here’s some positivity.

Even a UK government prone to constant screw ups was able to decide and sign orders for Covid vaccines in a reasonably prompt and timely manner.
Meanwhile the Eu beaurocratic juggernaut slowly pondered on obtaining approval blah blah blah from its debating member states leading to them wondering why all the vaccines are gone.

And spitting the dummy.:sad3:
