Sister moved to W/A [Perth] a few years ago and she had never even visited the place. She is happy enough.

Invites me to visit but I never will, to hot, to dry and all the wild life want to eat/sting/kill you/burrow under your skin...oh I hate flies too.

I would rather holiday in Europe and see some history/design.

Still good luck to all who are there just stop nicking our Masers ;o)

Amazing how that marketing works. We started all that stuff about spiders and snakes so that Aust remains the best kept secret on earth.
Cheers

Here you go. I have used 67P as the exchange rate and rounded the conversion to the nearest 1000. GTI in the UK 16000= 24000 AUD In Aust 38000 so 14000 gain. 3 year old ( I used 2009 for ease) BMW 520D in the UK 19500 =29000AUD. In Aust 48,000 so 19000 gain. F430 in the UK 80,000 = 120,000 AUD whereas in Aust the car is 280,000 so a 160,000 gain. Basically not worth importing utilitarian type vehicles but if you are moving here even they make sense. If you know you are moving here you would order an Australian spec car in the UK and further reduce costs as no compliancing needed at all.
Cheers
Geoff

Do not confuse personal imports (PI) ie brining yr car u have owned over & keeping (i beleive its now 5 yrs but need to check) vs importing a purchase o/s that is not a PI. (There are lists that tell which cars are elibile/not)

ie the F430 cannot be imported unless its a PI without paying exhorbitent imposts which would make the local purchase cheaper (assuming u can get it registered MOT)

LHD 8C on sale at the moment the owner did just that and its price is $600k aud -sale proof

So not 1yr ownership overseas...but 5?

Seems theyve caught on then......but your government taxes are punitive and ani-car and anti import oriented, how do they justify it?

As stated need to check on the 5 yr comment

Regarding justification, when does a Gov. need to justify its actions

Some of the feable reasons given -
-There is still a car manufacturing industry here to protect
-Those that can afford expensive exotics can afford to pay the high entry imposts - which seems to be the case given the number of fezzas/porsches/bmws/mercs that are sold
-Great revenue raiser, supported by the green party tree hugger movement that are anti expensive high fuel consumption vehicles

Situation is unlikely to change in the near future irrespective which party gets into power

Still its patently unfair and punitive.....what % of the market do local makers have?

Am laughing at last line......just how green is it digging up Western Oz to feed the hungry Asian manufacturing market?!

% of local market is quite high, 3 major players remain: Toyota, Holden(GM) & Ford these 3 hold around 45% of sales
They have a mix of local & some imported model but the bulk of their sales are from local production

Unique models ie Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon, Toyota Camry - so u have the full cycle ie from design to local production of parts (sub contract) to final assembly. Some models are exported to middle east as well as engine power plants to Euro & US
Some assembly components are imported so not totally 100% OZ produced

To keep the industry going, massive Gov. hand outs and as u would imaging, much debate is currently going on at the moment

I believe it's 12 months of ownership but you have to demonstrate you have owned and used it overseas, that is Icant buy one from here and just garage it for 12 months over there Adam not sure where you got the five years from unless it's changed since I bought my car in August last year. No one would bother owning a car for 5 years to bring in duty free as the depreciation in that time would send you backwards.
To stress your point these figures are all based on the assumption that some one is emigrating from the UK to Aust not importing a car under the RAWS. Scheme which is the scheme under which all the Masers are currently being brought in.

Just had a quick look on the Govt website. The 5 years relates to how many times you can bring a car in under the Personal Import scheme, ie once every 5 years.

What would my car be worth??

Oz is making sense hahahaha but i dont like snakes or spiders.....
Dem I don't think we answered the question

Don't worry about the snakes or spiders.....they aren't a problem. Your car is worth about 40,000 quid down here.

Good to know Geoff........but if you were really smart, you'd contact a close friend/family member well in advance who was intending to emigrate and buy the car for you........:)

Or even come to some agreement with someone coming out there and do it for you as a transaction...nothing illegal of course....:)

I started out down that path with a DB9 but the risk of someone changing their mind and the car being in their name made it all too hard but if you are going to do it then the math says do it with something expensive that will have a fat margin when you get it here. One of my buddies brought in an XKR after living in the UK for three years and made a very tidy sum when he sold it The really good news is that if you know you are coming you can order a car to Australian specs (Jags,Beemers,Mercs etc) and eliminate any compliance risk. Always an angle if you look hard enough.
Cheers
