To be fair I only caught part of the interview and the follow on reporting.

What I saw was a journalist desperate to make bad news, to which Boris replied 'It's a variant of concern, and we need to watch it'
Then 30 minutes of 'journalists' winding themselves up into paroxysms of terror.

Of course could well have been a different report. Problem is now eveyrone's asking him what we're doing about the variant and are SAGE telling him to stop easing restrictions etc etc

Oh well

Naturally we need to be concerned, but equally we have to stop panicking every time a new strain is reported. I’m sure there will be more in the future. Reputable reports have stated that it has been found in in travelers from India (who would have thought that) and more prevalent in those living in the same extended households and environments. Although suggested to be 60% more transmissible than the Kent variant there is no evidence that is more deadly. But no one can honestly say that it is not a matter of concern, and our government must react to matters of concern, within reason of course. I would really hate to be in their position, criticized if you do and criticized if you don’t. Personally, I’m only ordering Chinese take aways for the time being.

Very reasonable.

Boris addressing the nation at 5.
Postpone the relaxations from Monday because of the Indian varient?
Does seem appropriate to me until more vaccinated.
Let's face it, from Monday many are going to go crazy, and those will be mostly those that aren't vaccinated.
Why get to this stage and ruin all the hard work.

I think a change for Monday is highly unlikely given the overall position, so I am expecting a warning shot with regards the final stage on 21st June (if anything). Most likely positive actions they are taking such as testing testing testing and perhaps something around hot spot vaccination programme.

I see BBC reporting the R rate has gone from between 0.8-1.0 to between 0.8-1.1

So still vague as ever!

Well it's always going to be a bit of a finger in the wind, so something of a shame that it's been adopted as some kind of concrete measure without the required (perhaps) nuance. Plus ca change.

The Indian variant, why outside of India has the UK reported the largest number of Covid cases caused by this variant ?. Is it because the UK sequences a larger number of its covid cases and therefore recording a higher number. Irrespective, it looks like we are top of the league (outside of India) so far. Next thing, Europe will be blacklisting us again as potential spreaders of The UK / Indian variant.

Mmmmnnn, I think that’ll probably be because they allowed people to fly from India to the Uk for weeks and weeks whilst knowing about the apparent “variant of concern”.

But I could be wrong.

Yes, the borders should have been closed to India two weeks earlier, should have been put on the red list. Reason nothing to do with potential trade deals with India Im sure!

We have heard that a few times now that borders should have been closed sooner during this pandemic.
Explains why it's not easy to find a Curry house here in France though from that chart.

I struggled for weeks to find flights and a route to Denmark.
If i had been going to Asia, the flight wasn’t an issue, it was getting a seat.
I can’t find the story on the BBC of the man who was so grateful to be on the last flight back from Delhi. He’d been visiting his family......
