A few of you will know that I have owned a 1981 Esprit since 2004 but had never driven it as it was bought in bits. It has been restored in dribs and drabs since then when funds permitted and other projects (Marcos/4200/Astons) weren't in the way.

Well last Tuesday I finally went to collect it and actually saw it complete for the first time.

When I bought it in 2004, it looked like this:

At the 11th hour, with everything just about ready to go we discovered it needed a new engine as the turbo had seized as well as the whole engine being buggered due to lack of use. Commissioned a new engine via South West Lotus, same 2.2 turbo but wet sumped rather than dry sumped and kicking out 240bhp rather than around the 200 mark. Car weights about 1100kg from memory.

Still got a few hundred miles of running in but it's nippy at 3000rpm and I can just hear the turbo spooling up and dumping through the waste gate - looking forward to the full effect in a few weeks.

The interior is amongst the best of any car I have sat in, biscuit leather with black alcantara and so comfortable, the pictures don;t really show the colours. Vision is surprisingly good through a decent back window and rear quarterlights.

Will it be relaible? It's been stripped to nothing and totally rebuilt, all electrical connections reterminated. Engine, brakes and suspension are all new, every nut and bolt is where it should be so just maybe it will hold together...

Cool is a subjective term, everyone has a different opinion of what it means. This is, in my opinion, the coolest car I have ever owned :)

Lewis, that looks the dogs danglys, surely you can't sell it now, thats criminal!

I think that would work well on the track at Llandow in October, what do you recon?

Might well do - was thinking Llandow anyway, but what to bring... Might be a bit cruel to the Esprit but would certainly flag any issues with the rebuild ;)

The Aston might be more fun though... we'll see.

Not planning on selling just yet, it's fun to drive so far!

Good to hear Lewis, I think you might as well get a year out of it for you move here on, as I am sure you are not going to get anything near your investment back.

Probably something like a third, maybe only a quarter... :(

Unless I don't sell at all, which is entirely possible!

I agree, iPhone pics make it look blue and cream - its definitely black alcantara and black leather wheel with biscuit/tan leather :)

Thanks all, must admit to sneaking through the garage to have another look at it. It's an amazing bit of kit :)

I think it's a ridiculously cool car, if folk don't think it's cool, they don't understand the meaning of the word. Well done Lewis, epic car.
