Seeing as security (a home) is, according to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, ranked just above food and air, I'd say paying off the mortgage so that you always have that security is higher ranking than a car.

Ego in fact is a number of levels above security, however we all kinda skip to that one when we think about cars.

Sensible/best use of spare cash, we all know what it is... And then completely ignore it. And then go and spunk cash on cars

Basically never liked my Brother Inlaws 360. Not a fan....Where as love the Cayman GT4...
You sound like a Porsche enthusiast. What with your comments about my 996 X50 Turbo with manual box, 991 Turbo S ride in a friends car that you shared, and now a GT4. The Gt4 is a really nice car. But be aware that it is not a Mezger. it is a flat 4 carrera engine when it first came out - don't know about more recent variants - but I was never keen on Cayman's or Boxster's though they are good cars. I was always fascinated by the classic 911 shape. The front-engined Porsches do absolutely nothing for me either despite owners extolling the virtues of 924, 944, 968 cars and the variants such as Turbo and CS. Seems like you should consider Porsche ownership. Go over to 911UK.com and join the discussions.

Now that is a beauty......I do like Porsches. Never driven one that didn't excite. All this thing about no soul I never get...Porche make great drivers cars and they sale do something that the the Italian Supercar makers struggle with. Great cars for everyday use as well.

I cant comment on the f1 boxes (just traditional autos) but for me it's not speed of shift but the actual control you have. I like being able to drop a few gears, (dare I say it, ride the clutch) and throw a few power slides (when safe to do so) by dumping the clutch as and when I want that I cant with an auto. I know I'm not going to accidentally blip down or up too many gears when really pressing on and when giving it some, while not being a 10/10ths driver the connection makes roads more involving - certainly on traditional autos.

Does he like bikes? Jet skis? Power boat? Different strokes - maybe a Gallardo?
One of the things I like about the F1/DS/CC semi-autos is that you can easily change up or down while cornering, or just negotiating a roundabout.

Whether it's a good idea to do it while hard-cornering I dunno!

Totally agree one of the best cars I have bought is our 05 987.1 3.2 S
What a quality car all around I don't think I can say anything negative about the poor man's Porsche ;)

I thought the software inhibited that. Certainly did on the GT as well as down shifting if it detected steep descents

My QP definitely does, but to be fair never tried while pressing on. It inhibits downshifting though when it thinks its inappropriate, ie liable to wreck the engine or just lug it.

Got me wondering now but I definitely paddle up and down on roundabouts and normal turns, if only to get out of first quicker!

Sorry - meant to say GT3. But the Carrera GTS is another good bet.

The GT3s are fun. I sort of bought a 997.1 GT3 some years ago, but due to some domestic angst (something to do with the number of seats) it didn't happen. I'd not have lost too much on that. Well, maybe a wife, but, well...

Think I’d go for the original, so a series 1 996 GT3. A good one is around £60k these days. A really good fun car and not a silly amount of power. Should be a safe medium/long term investment also. If I was forced to sell the Strad and replace it with a car of similar value, the 996 GT3 would be it.

I think a GT3 is a great call - but the 996 is just too ugly (front that is) - esp when an extra 10k gets you a gen 1 997
