I have a Maserati 4200 cc which seems to need a new clutch. It has been 'slipping' for a few weeks. I've taken it into a main Maserati dealer but they can't deal with old Maserati's! Since then the gears have gone into neutral on my driveway and will not start. All the dashboard lights are on but engine does nothing when the key is turned. Not even a click or sound from the starter motor. I assume this is some protection mechanism as the clutch may need changing? It is currently stuck in Neutral and won't roll, it's blocking my drive way. On the newer Maserati's I know there is a lever under the foot well that releases the gear box. Doesn't seem to be one on my 4200. Any ideas how I can move the car or 'disconnect' the gear box whilst in Neutral so I can roll it?

Thanks

Steve
P.S. I've been quoted £5000 for new clutch anyone know of a much cheaper service in the south coast please let me know. It seems the car is not worth much more than that these days. :(

You cannot sell it as it is. So the price is what it is to fix it. It may be less if the car does not need a new flywheel.

The parts cost is high. The only saving will be with a lesser labour rate. This is not a job for any garage. So it needs a Maserati Independent to change the clutch parts and set it all up. And my guess is that all these indys with SD2 diagnostics are gonna be in the same ball-park figure of labour at £100 + VAT per hour.

There isn’t a mechanism that stops the engine starting because of a worn clutch. Can you hear the hydraulic pump priming when you unlock or open the door?

If the dash is showing neutral it should roll with the handbrake off, so if it doesn’t then either your handbrake is frozen on or your gearbox isn’t actually in neutral. If the pump isn’t priming then you won’t have the hydraulic pressure to get it out of gear and it will need recovering with some rollers.

Your pressing the brake pedal yes?

As above, if the clutch or pump has gone it may say N but actually is in gear and thus if it can't take it out of gear, the car will not start.
