Switching to a DE safety razor or Cut Throat

It's not ivory. It's just elephant bone, carved from a tooth it happily gave to a tooth fairy.

I've no idea what it is, it's probably fancy-plastic coated something. It's nothing too special

Decided I am going to order the Mercur 37C slant edge closer comb razor (or maybe the 39C with longer handle) from Connaught

Rationalising the requirements - thick Iranian beard with sensitive dry skin I think the EJ DE89 is way too mild for me... I do not think it would handle my 1-2 week beard as I have to make 3.5 passes on 2-3 day stubble although some of this could be my method which is improving.

Not a big deal as the DE89 was only £20 and I can fit it into my travel bag (for whenever that gets used again)
Once you get the hang of your razor, use Feather blades.

I could quite confidently use the feathers in the EJ DE89 without worrying too much about cutting myself. The geometry of the head stops you from from being able to cut yourself once you get to a "bad" angle the combs override the blade immediately. Which is good for beginners and it was what I was looking for but already more confident as it really is not that hard if you have a decent method with cartridges

Btw this is the 37C https://connaughtshaving.com/merkur37c.html 39C https://connaughtshaving.com/merkur39c.html

Look a bit more up to the task

Yeah, really cutting yourself is not really any more likely than with cartridges. Unless you drop it, or go along the blade ;)

Well what an interesting diversion! Already using brush and shaving soap bowl. Massive improvement on shaving foam. Had ancient plastic DE safety razor for emergency use. The emergency was often "no money for ruinously expensive cartridge razors".
Almost pressed to buy button on new shave kit but might as well show to my family for birthday :) May as well go the whole hog and get the stand too.

I figured we talk about everything else on here lol. I was hesitant in creating the thread but @CatmanV2 and @rossyl have been very helpful

I mentioned earlier my only experience with these was when a family member shaved my face for me when abroad 16/17 years ago... It was a plastic open comb DE... terrifying thing! I was left with at least a dozen cuts so i was very nervous using the EJ DE89 for the first time the other day until I got into it and realised it's basically the same as a cartridge razor just slightly more fiddly

For sure get a nice razor for your birthday. The Feather ones look like a work or art but pricey

Just ordered up this beast Merkur 39C long handle slant bar closed comb razor from Connaught.

Also I am going to order a stand and bowl from eBay as its a little cheaper and more selection.

I noticed there are scuttle mugs on there for under £10 but they are not the prettiest things - some of them the remind me of the tatt you get in sea front shops in British resorts! I might order a cheap plane one to try it out @rossyl guess any shave soap bar that slots into the top can work right?

Wow, this shaving lark is very, very, very involved.:)

TBH I take care over it because I find it both boring and potentially un-comfortable. One of the reasons I don't like hotels so much is they never have mirrors in the showers, which is one of the best places I've found to shave. Shaving over a sink always leaves my face dry and uncomfortable (diddums!)I've tried to find travel shaving mirrors without a great deal of luck, but with no travel for the time being, it's all good!

Oh, plus! Boys with toys! ;)
