I noticed that on the Derby blades the sides are numbered 1-4, any reason for that? Would you flip the blade for the next use?

I tried the Green label Derby for a second shave and it was rather unpleasant, guess they are only good for one shave for me

I am thinking about buying the Merkur 34C to compare notes apparently it is a little more aggressive which might suit me better

No idea, and never noticed. Didn't like them much and I think I've only used a couple from my starter pack years ago.

I would be very surprised at a blade only lasting one shave. Try another brand. Like I said, they're all a little different. And you can end up with a bad batch or packet.

Yeah I was thinking the same. Remarkable at the lack of smoothness compared to the first shave, still close cut though

Upon further obsessing... I mean research I gathered that the EJ DE89 which has same head as Mahle R89 are very much the safest of DE safety razors which could mean that they do not get the most out of each blade(?)

I didn't experience that with Derby. They are my favourites. How odd.

Tried the shave scuttle yet?

Could be, but really wouldn't like to say.

If it helps, I use this: https://www.drharris.co.uk/product/safety-razor-3-piece-ivory

No doubt there's an unbranded one for half the price

Tried the scuttle yet?

I showed it to my wife and she said why don't you take a mug of hot water with you

I guess putting the soap on top warms up the bar and helps with the lather...

I'll give it a try with a mug before investing lol

Enjoy.

You can use a mug, fill it with hot water, wait for it to heat up, then lather in it, but, the lather will cool.

Whereas what I was referring is effectively a bain-marie. Consequently, lather will stay hot for ages - so if you wanted to do two passes, on the second pass the lather is still nice and warm.

I just prefer it. What's life without preference and choice!

Decided I am going to order the Mercur 37C slant bar closed comb razor (or maybe the 39C with longer handle) from Connaught

Rationalising the requirements - thick Iranian beard with sensitive dry skin I think the EJ DE89 is way too mild for me... I do not think it would handle my 1-2 week beard as I have to make 3.5 passes on 2-3 day stubble although some of this could be my method which is improving.

Not a big deal as the DE89 was only £20 and I can fit it into my travel bag (for whenever that gets used again)
