Cruise Control

There's a white cylinder that the steering column turns which catches a little tab that cancels the indicators...I'll put a pic up of one I have ready to be fitted later this afternoon. Make sure the cylinder is being turned by the steering wheel.

Roger, please can you give the part number - presume you fitted it to a 4200? Does the cruise work and the only thing not working is the self-cancelling of indicator?

Thanks for coming back.

Yes, cruise works but self-cancelling of indicator doesn't.

It's on a GS.

This is the piece I have, and is set to have the indicators signalling left...

As you can see in this close-up, the white cylinder in the middle is engaged with a small tab that moves inward when the indicator is on...

When the wheel turns right, it will rotate the cylinder with it and push the tab up, cancelling the indicator.

If the cylinder isn't engaged with the steering wheel / column then it won't cancel.

Similarly, if those tabs aren't being moved when you move the indicator stalk, then they won't cancel.

It could just be your Alfa stalk. We have two 166's, cruise works on both. Indicators cancel on one car most of the time but on the other, not so much !

Hi, I'm new to this forum. I have a 2005 GranSport that I'm wanting to install the cruise control option. I followed the instructions from earlier in this thread. The only tricks so far is that a Torx driver is required to remove air-bag, and steering wheel nut is 24mm. Anyway, I was expecting the steering wheel to easily come off after removing the nut, but even after severe budging the wheel is still in place. No sign of it moving. Is there a trick I don't know of? If worst comes to worst, is there a factory tool used to pull the wheel off?

Greetings from a rather hot Australia.

Hi CatmanV2, Thanks for that link, I didn't see it earlier. As it turned out I removed the outer wheel from the hub (boss) and I happened to have those exact pullers from the article. I put them on, used some cable ties to ensure the legs didn't spring out, and hey presto, the boss worked its way off.
My next bit of bother was the phillips head screws holding the paddles on. I think my car was assembled by an Italian gorilla having a day out from the zoo. Everything was so tight.
Anyhow, its getting late so the re-assembly starts tomorrow.
As an aside, cruise control has saved me from speeding numerous times in my older cars. I was worried I was going to get a speeding ticket in no time. The Maser is so much fun its all to easy to be just over the limit quickly.
I haven't had a speeding fine for over 20 years. 3 days ago, my cruise control arrived from Eurospares. On the very same day, a speeding fine arrives in the post. $290AUD fo being 20km over the 100km limit.
The sooner I install it the better.
Cheers.

Yowch. Glad you're making progress. I want to get my wheel recovered, and I'm not looking forward to getting it off. I suppose I can remove it from the boss, though.

I'm really surprised that the GS didn't get cruise as standard....

Just as a by the way, I had my 4200 spyder in with McGraths who quoted just under £400.00 to supply and fit, as you say they mentioned everything was there bar the stalk. Sean

An update on my Cruise Control installation. Completed the re-assembly. One thing to watch for is the alignment of clockspring tangs into white indicator reset sleeve.
The wheel need as much force getting it back on as it did taking it off. Must be tight tolerances on mine. Otherwise photos taken during the disassembly were helpful in the re-assembly, particularly the routing of cables.
Went for a test drive. CC works perfectly. Thanks everyone.

Hi CatmanV2. Having removed the wheel and the boss for my CC upgrade, to recover the wheel would only require the air-bag (2 torx screws + battery disconnect procedure mentioned elsewhere) and 4 Allen bolts holding wheel to boss. These were tight on mine. Blue residue indicates thread-lock was used in original assembly.
Cheers, MaserRoo.

Thanks, buddy. That's really useful to know and obviates the risk of the misalignment that you so neatly sidestepped. Gave one of our members are right headache.

Hi

Did we ever get the Alfa part number off a stalk meant for a Alfa 166, that definitely worked on the 4200/GS?

Thanks
