X-pipe options for 4200

I've finally convinced her indoors to let me make some mods to the exhaust on the 4200 and I have decided to go for an X-pipe 1st then go for some wheel spacers. I've seen a YouTube video by Richard Najdecki of a before and after and it gives a louder richer sound. I've spoken to a couple of custom exhaust manufacturers locally, MIJ in Walsall and Torqueflow in Birmingham. MIJ have quoted £120 and Torqueflow £250-270. Larini do one on the performanceitalia site for £414. There is a big price difference between the three. I don't want to do it on the cheap but equally don't want to be fleeced. So my questions are

1) are there any alternatives to the options above
2) are they easy to fit yourself given I'm not the most mechanically minded person in the world
3) will the us spec x-pipe do the same job
4) does anyone have one for sale

Hi Tinman;

Your quote from Torquflow sounds about on the money I wouldn't go higher, I've just got the straight through X-pipe no resonator on mine and it upped it from 101db to 103db and I now get a little crackle and a much better rumble without droning some complain about.

1) yes DIY, if you cut out the resonator you can just weld in straight stainles tube sections to each side, making a jig to hold the cut off ends in the right place wouldn't be difficult.
2)Yes, took me a couple of hours but rusty nuts are a problem possibly, use lots of WD40 and if needed heat and a big hammer, drop the M8 bolts out of the suspension hangers on the middle section to allow the rear end to drop and give enough free space to clear the couplings!
3) Don't know
4) No sorry mines a keeper!

Tinman, if you pm me a contact number I will call you when home. I can give you the gen regarding exhaust mods as I've done quite a bit of messing around with them. (I'm back on Sunday).

Nice to see someone actually looks at my videos!!

Have a look at http://www.sportsmaserati.com/showthread.php/10439-Exhaust-Mod-Stage-1-X-Pipe and http://www.sportsmaserati.com/showthread.php/10715-Exhaust-Mod-Stage-2-Sports-Cats

There are pics in those threads of my x-pipe and front section mods.

Good luck. BTW the exhaust is a SH*T load louder in person and has a Ferrari-esk whine to it with the front section mod.

Your video has been my inspiration. The wife doesn't want it too loud and I though the x-pipe replacement should give me the increased volume. People have commented how good it sounds but I can't hear it when I'm driving so hopefully the x-pipe will give me what I need.

Thanks for the advice but I'll go for a professional as I can see me messing it.

Tinman, the X-pipe alone is very subtle, may not give you all you seek!

Interesting point of view. I may only do one mod to the exhaust so it needs to be the right one I guess. I don't want to run the risk of the car not passing the MOT if I remove CATS etc or having it so load that it is anti-social but want to get that V8 burble at idle and a proper roar when I stamp on the gas.

Doing one part of the three (headers and cats, centre box and rear boxes) doesn't do a lot, doing two parts really wakens them up. Hopefully there will be a video coming up next week that shows the difference when you do two parts, in this case an unsilenced X-pipe and modified rear GS boxes. It should be interesting so watch this space!

I have sports cats on mine but stock from there backwards. It doesn't seem to sound much different from all stock.

I'll have an unsilenced x-pipe next week as well, so will let you know the difference - I have a video of a run in the current setup and will do a comparison one after the swap.

I have removed my Larini back boxes and will be selling them. I am returning the car to stock for possible sale in the near future (moving up the Maserati ladder hopefully). I will let the forum know when I'm selling after I've cleaned them up a bit. If I did it right you can access a short video of my car with the Larinis here (recorded for fun not this forum):

Just watched the video. Truly awesome and a volume I could live with. Are they just back boxes and nothing else. I'd like to get first dibs clean or otherwise but you can probably sell them for more than I can afford. :-(

Hi Tinman,

For the sound you're looking for you would be better off replacing the back boxes, not the x pipe. I put a set of Marios straight throughs on mine .....fantastic, burbling V8, crackles nicely on changing down and gutsy with some wellie and a good price. Larinis would be ideal, but if you're on a budget, as I was, try these. There's a used set for sale on the 'other' forum from Ade. Good price.

Hi Tinman

I recently modified the exhaust set up on my car. I made 2 changes, 1) to remove the secondary cats and 2) to fit Larini rear boxes.

I was after an improvement in sound rather than loudness.

I initially removed the secondary cats but the difference was negligible, so then fitted the Larini rear boxes. I was pretty concerned I would find the noise too much with the Larinis. It is louder, but in a very good way. It isn't silly loud, and depending on how I drive it it can be a sensible volume through built up areas. Inside the car it's absolutely fine and not much changed when driving quietly - my wife says she can't really notice any difference so that gives you an idea, although to be honest I can hear the difference. There is a band where it sounds sumptuous. And the downshifts and when I ease off the revs sometimes causes a lovely deep sound and then pops away. I love it, it now sounds how it should do.

I posted a before and after Larini on youtube but this doesn't do justice to the Larinis when I'm driving - ask Phil (Contigo) who was following me last night:

Tinman I'd snap them up from Moz as soon as! I decided I can always sell the Larinis if I don't like them (just remember to keep the OEMs) - but they are epic!!!

I'm a bit slow so can you be a bit more specific on the 'other' forum. :)

maseratiforum.co.uk is the 'other' forum...

It isn't as busy as this one. This is the best IMO.
