I've just read on another thread that shift linkages can be an issue on manuals.

Can someone fill in the details on this please?

What in particular issue should I look for? What's the fix? How expensive is said fix?

Thank you.

As I understand it;

The Manual system uses cables from the gearbox to the stick to facilitate the gear change. The box is located at the rear of the car so the cables are quite long.

Cables stretch over time, they can be adjusted, however once you reach the limit of the adjustment new ones are required.

Unfortunately these are NLA from Maserati and so you will need to find an alternative.

58k on mine, cables never adjusted and gear change is fine. Based on past conversations on this forum not sure it is a common problem? Obviously something to check on prospective purchase/ as part of ppi.

Thanks to you both. I'm looking at the car linked to above. It has done 70,000 miles.

If I "need to find an alternative" are the cables a regular spec? Is the job of replacing them straightforward?

How about converting a CC to a manual? Plenty of BMW owners doing similar things with the likes of an M3 CS with SMG to Manual not costing fortunes.

The issue with that are the secondary parts like the pedal box and gear lever. On an E46 M3 those parts are a dime a dozen being shared with the regular 3 but in the 4200 it is unique to this platform.

Adjusting and lubing the cables and linkage is not hard, lots of good info on it. The problem with a CC to 6mt conversion is sourcing the parts.
For instance, this little beauty, when you could buy one, was $1800.00

And I’ve also noticed on manual 4200 unlike the 3200 there’s a really nasty unfinished looking gap between the leather boot and the knob.

Hey 1B, Corvette is looking sweet!
Are you talking about the leather boot (gaiter) that covers the shaft, or the knob itself?
Let the snide comments commence! :)

There’s this sort of weird metal bit and a gap that looks unfinished, I think it’s part of the knob itself but just looks like bare metal. 85046

And the cables?

Not for spyder. I assume that's because the spyder's shorter?
