You'd need to be below -25 degrees to fall outside the defined parameters, so for most situations either 5w or 10w makes no difference. At hot operating temperature the difference is minuscule at between 3.8 x the viscosity of water as opposed to 4.1. (both of which are pretty 'pissy')
For me the problem with Shell Helix is that, with regular use, it sheers very quickly. This is 'suggested' in the owners manual with the get out of jail clause... certain driving conditions may lead to more regular oil changes being required. I have experienced this first hand and oil change every 6K miles was advised.
In my 4200 I ran 10W60 initially because I tracked the car. First time I used 5W40 and the oil was shot afterwards (easily noticeable with a loss of oil pressure (VII's breaking down / sheering) so I replaced with 10W60 and it lasted far better, so I kept on using it.
In the GS I am also now running 10W60 simply because I think the Shell is pretty poor oil. Whatever VII's they use are cr@p in my opinion ( well accounting for regular, often spirited use) A good indication was changing the oil after only 5 months ownership and 6K miles added. The oil came out black and changing to fresh 10W60 added at least half a bar of pressure when hot - again an indication that the VII's were sheering in no time at all.
Horses for courses and just my preferences...
