When is a puncture not a puncture?

When it's a cracked rim. :(
There's me hoping that the tyre wall hadn't been compromised and it turned out to be worse than that - **** and blast.
So.....
Weld? Have been told that this isn't likely to hold for long and is this a sensible option safety-wise anyway?
Second-hand? Anyone know of a good, clean second-hand front 20 inch Neptune in mercury for a Gran Turismo?
Or is new the best way to go?
Advice appreciated.

had both my X5 rear 20 inch monsters welded by my local wheel restorer at £75 each, don't think there's any safety issue if done properly, wouldn't get any tom dick or harry to do it though, I'm assuming you're talking small hairline crack only

The weld will end up being potentially stronger than the wheel so shouldn't be an issue as long as the bead is clean and true. Buying a single alloy needing repainted can be, sometimes best to get the two on the same side done to get a decent match.

This. A properly repaired wheel is pretty much as good as a new wheel. Plus you won’t have to deal with colour matching.

Thanks everyone.
I think for that money I will speak to Autofficina first thing tomorrow. The cracked rim had a real clout last year (pothole) which ruined the tyre on it, and I was told it had several other small dents in it already, so maybe it's time for it to go now rather than weld the crack on a rim with other damage when this nice new one is a good deal.
Hopefully, as long as its the correct colour and still available, it'll be sorted before Christmas.

On another matter, is there some sort of lubricant that can be put on the exhaust valves? One of mine (passenger side maybe?) sounds like it's scraping metal against metal with a sharp sort of ping at the end. They are clearly opening and closing as there is still a definite change in tone when pushing the sport button. I realise you can't just stick some grease on them, but is there some sort of high temperature stuff you can use or do they need replacing before they seize up?

I have used DP-60 white lithium grease and it has worked well. It has good high temperature operating properties so should hopefully do the trick for you

So...the new rim from Autofficina hopefully arrives tomorrow and with luck I'll be able to get it fitted on Friday - thanks Navcorr and Bladerunner for the spot. Meridien wanted £634 for one so this is a good deal I reckon.
Thanks again to all for your advice and top tips on rims and grease - no sniggering at the back!

Just happened to remember seeing it - must be at least 5-6 weeks ago iirc.
Think they had it up for £400 then and remember thinking it was a bargain for someone. So 25% less - happy days. Glad someone here got it

I'm surprised that it had hung around for that long even at £400 considering how utterly appalling the roads are. This must happen a lot. It comes to something when you have to drive scanning the road surface for craters - next to impossible at the moment with all the rain. The tyre chap said he'd had three cars in that day with cracked rims and another Maser in 2 weeks earlier that had just come back from a suspension re-build due to a pothole. I'll tip toe from now on. If you see a Maser mincing down the road it'll be me!
