I was reading a thread in another forum about a Fulvia and was commenting about its amazing engine.

What were or are the top ten engines in any car you have owned or driven and where does the Maserati ones come? Some of these ngines I hae less experience of but in total driven about 450k with them.

Mine:

  1. Alfasud flat 4: Revved all day, smooth, economical
  2. Rover/Honda V6: super smooth; economical; do 135mph/ 5000rpm without iusse for long periods.
  3. Lamborghini V12: 1960's to 1990. The noise; can actually pull 10000rpm but happy reving to 8000prm time after time; low speed torque; the noise
  4. Ferrari V8: flat plane crank 308-328. The upper engine nosie; revving; economy; tracability
  5. Maserati V8: 1970's. The nosie; torque; flexablity
  6. Lamborghini / Audi V10: the noise; smoothness
  7. Maserati 2002's- V8. the nosie; smoothness; flexability
  8. Lancia V4. Fulvia etc:Just a Jewel of an engine. Revved; nosie Engineering.
  9. Passat W8: Smooth; Revving;
  10. BMW Straight 6. Various years: Smooth; revving.

Tin helmet and flak jacket on. Expecting to get shot down on about the rankign of the Maserati engines!

After the Masser? Tin helmet for me too, my top engine has to be the kv6, not the early 825 version but the one fitted to the zs and zt in 180/190 guise, 5 years I tried to blow that thing up lol , you would be surprised how much they have in common with the 3200 engine.

No particular order:

Alfa Twin Spark
Alfa Busso V6
BMW M3 CSL
Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG
Ferrari 612 Scaglietti
Mercedes M100 (450 SEL 6.9)
Mercedes AMG 7.0 V12
Honda Civic Type R EP3
Maserati GS
Maserati Biturbo V6
-
Honourable mention to the Shamal’s V8. Really needs an extra 1000rpm or a driveline shunt/gearchange that’s not quite as restrictive...

Some of those might seem odd - the EP3’s engine lacks low down grunt but then that’s what gives the car distinctive character.

Interesting idea Paul.

I’d go this way, in no particular order

Porsche 3.6 turbo - the air cooled noise and the thump from the turbo
Maserati 4.7 v8 - best sounding engine ever
Ferrari v12 - joint best sounding and the power, wow the power!
BMW straight 6 diesel - so smooth and torquey
VW v10 diesel (i had a Touareg r50 for ages, mega mega car) - grunt like nothing else
BMW z4mc - the 3.2 straight six, free revving and totally smooth power band
VW Corrado vr6 - sound, grunt, everything a daily should be
Audi 3.2 - great everyday
Honda S2000 - utter rubbish and wit no torque until the vtec kicks in, then its a hoot

Ferrari v12 - latest version
Ferrari 3.9 twin turbo
Maserati 4.2 v8
Nissan RB26 straight 6
BMW 3.2 straight 6
Vw air cooled 1600... it’s not about performance or sound but the longevity of the design.

My fav all time engine is a Cosworth DFV sadly I haven’t driven a car with one though I doubt I ever will.

Loved the straight 5 in my Audi 100 CS back on 1989.
Had an Audi 200 Turbo Quattro back in the day, C100 BNF, wish I'd kept that plate....

From Peter Hook's book, Joy Division and New Order bassist, and massive car buff...

Kawasaki ZX9R, I could not pin the throttle and count to ten before running out of UK. Bal-effing-listic.

Oh car? Polo 16v 1.4l engine and a genuine 120mph. 4up coming back from oasis gig in Hanover on the autobahn mid 90's. They only woke up when I lifted...for Mcdonalds at Rheda-wiedenbruch...

Some great engines. I recall being overtaken by a 450 SEL 6.9 on the motorway outside Cannes in October 78 cruising quietly and effortlessley at 130mph. I tried to buy one but the seller refued to sell it. I have always wanted that car. A 600 for the masses!

So just cars I've driven...This for me isn't just about noise but how they compliment the car and how they made me feel when driven...So as much about the application as the engine.

V12 Vantage
M3 CSL Straight 6
N430 V8 Vantage
McLaren 12C Twin Turbo V8
Gallardo V10
Stradale
TVR Speed 6
BMW E30 M3 2.3 4 Pot
Alfa GTV V6 Busso
Lancia delta Integrale 2L 4 Cylinder.

Nice choices Andy but the E30 M3 is a 4 pot motor and an absolute gem too.

Can't give you ten, partly because I keep my best cars for years and the ones I swap a lot are the workhorse **** heaps. So not counting the latter, which includes some horrible diesels, here goes:

  1. Current Mas 4200
  2. Alfa 3.2 v6 Busso
  3. 1985 Lancia 2000ie twin cam
  4. Alfa 2.5v6 12v Busso
  5. Alfa 3.0v6 24v Busso
  6. Alfa 1.5 Boxer twin carb
  7. Curveball, and most surprising,1991 VW Polo GT coupe 1.3

The Stradale’s 4.7 is sublime, my winner.
My old C63, AMG’s very own Nascar.
Sure various other pieces of Italian, German & English exotica but for memorable experiences of other engines then:
For torque got to be the Volvo in an Aussie client’s double-trailer road train which I drove at 60kmh+. Driving something that has a payload of 68 tonnes and pulls away from a standstill like it does was mind blowing.
Ragging a South African client’s armoured car around their wet skidpan was amusing. Not the fastest or most exciting engine but fully laden (US$100m+) would be the most expensive car I’ve ever driven.......!!
