Just got back from the Solent after being aboard the Maserati Yacht. She is leaving tonight for the Med and I have been invited to meet up with her in Palma for a bit of warm weather sailing.

It didn't break the Trans Atlantic record but came very close until the wind died so after doing a bit of PR around Italy it's off to New York in the autumn to have another try.

Down below is all black carbon fibre and hydraulics with absolutely no creature comforts but nobody cares about that when your on the edge at 30+ knots.

Utterly fantastic. if that's what floats your boat of course.

Different cultures; over here women do as they are told. We put what we want on our bedroom walls. (BTW, if my nagger read this she would beat me up!)

The boat used to be called Ericson and was built as a Volvo 70 for the Round the World race series. Maserati bought it and modified it to make it lighter and faster then put Giovanni Soldini on board as skipper, gave him half a million euros and said 'go win us some records' . Nice work if you can get it.

In Top Gear this month the MC Stradale takes a pot noodle to Giovanni Soldini and he says sailing the boat in high winds is like going down a steep mountain in a bus with no brakes. Now that has to be quite exciting..

I think they need to make a trip downunder at the end of the year to tackle the "Sydney to Hobart". There have been no car manufacturer boats in the fleet for decades. I would love to hear the local commentary say, "wild oats has a small lead over nicorette, but we expect MASERATI to take them both under the cover of the night".

I'd send an email to Maserati PR. I'm sure they would be up for it as Giovanni Soldini is game for anything and has the backing to play.

Maserati PR may be worth an email. Although the Sydney to Hobart is not like a Chanel crossing. Also, I didnt think the Italians had any money at the moment. Aren't they going the way of Spain?

I had the very special benefit of meeting Giovanni last weekend when I was on board the boat and he said Maserati gave him half a million budget to go get some records plus they spent 8 million on the boat including mods. Fiat are obviously very proud of their children and money is not the issue. Italy may well be broke but Fiat are another matter.
He told me Ferrari would never do anything like this, by that he meant do something away from their core business and that Maserati was sexy and stylish enough to make it look like a natural extension. Never heard a truer word.
