Working overseas, so looking for a VPN app to work on phone and laptop. Mainly for booking flights, buying and watching stuff (not smutt...). Theses loads about and plenty of recommendation sites, but unclear how impartial these are.

Why do you think you need one?

Anyway, when I do need one, I use Atlas free version.

With Windscribe, you get 10Gb free per month which should certainly cover online purchasing and a few downloads. Performance is reasonable.

Because it enables you to book flights from anywhere to anywhere and pay anywhere ,where as in UK that's impossible using a UK IP address

That is one good reason, although you need to have a choice of endpoints to connect to, which not all set ups have.

Why would one need one?

If you want to access sites that are not available in your country of residence, or feel that you your online activities need a further layer of obfuscation.

Companies use them to show that data from internal systems to external laptops and so on is being encrypted, cannot be 'eavesdropped'. Also we can limit access to resources by allowing only access across a VPN. We use these at my company, and also for my home use, none of my internal network resources (files, bank records, emails etc) are accessible unless you connect to the VPN that lives in my loft.

They are now being marketed that everyone needs one 'for a safer internet' (Nord VPN I'm looking at you). Which is utter toss. Most people *don't* need them.

I use ExpressVPN, you do pay but you can put it on a few devices. Worked well booking flights to Oz, I saved over £1200 for the 3 of us, TUI uk however block you from using a VPN.

How does using a vpn help with booking flights?
Eb
Sometimes those cheeky airlines have prices set differently depending on where you are.. having a vpn mean they think you’re somewhere other than where you really are and sometimes offer a different price. Some vpns allow you to choose the ‘country’ you’re ‘in’.

I use Nord VPN. I watch Amazon Prime, BBC iPlayer etc when living in Spain for a couple of months in winter. It avoids all those spanish pop-up ads and safeguards bank payments electronically on UK or abroad.

Nord VPN has a large number of location servers, enables no traces left on internet sites and searches. Can be used on up to 5 devices with one license.

You get what you pay for. The free ones are cr4p. Some fee paying obes have very limited data download capabilities.
