That thread tells you how to do ti if you have the 3 pin connectors.
If you have the 16pin ODB connector but an non ODB compliant ECU (seems to be on late 2000 / early 2001 cars) your need Unidiag with the KWP2000 definition files and set the 5 baud init - but be sure to use a VW V.A.G .COM lead. The lead is the critical part. An ELM 327 forr example, will not work.
My *** lead was one of these:

Good afternoon Arnie,
I have exactly the set-up you mentioned in your email, my car is a Dec 2000 model.
I have obtained the Unidiag software from Dave Shanks' website "Maserati3200.net" and bought a KKL VAG-COM USB/DLC connector, which came up when I followed your link above on e-bay. Interestingly, the connector has many Fiat, Lancia, Alfa cars in its look up table, and Magneti Marelli ECUs abound as options
The Problem I hope you can help me with:
I am having some problems getting the various software to 'talk' to each other. I have loaded the Unigiag software on an old Lenovo laptop running windows 10, and it boots up fine, although other than the 5 baud setting, you mention, I am unsure what setting the myriad of other field are supposed to be set to;
I am having problems getting the connector software recognising the Unidiag, which I assume is the 'driver' software many threads refer to? Any way if you could possibly put pen to paper, and itemise the load, setup and run procedure I (and I'm sure many other owners) would be very grateful for any advice you can provide in clearing my CEL: it has been on for over a year now!
Cheers, Chris
