Hi,

I had started to hear an unusual ticking kind of noise from the nearside so took the 3200 to the garage and put it up on the ramp. The noise seems to be comming from the nearside turbo so will price up a recon one as a new turbo from eurospares is £2000+!!!
Has anyone else experienced a worn turbo in a 3200? to access it is it easier to take the engine out or lower the subframe to access it as it looks bloomin difficult to get to??

Thanks in advance

Andrew

Try turbo dynamics or turbo technics. I am sure you will be able to get them done a lot cheaper than £2000+. There may be a chance they can do a hybrid turbo which will give less lag and better boost.

There were a pair of Turbo's for sale on ebay earlier theis week at £500 each. I have also been advised that eurospares can get them rebuilt you just need to call them as they don't advertise this.

I have no experience of taking them off but it must be done from beneath as you will have to take the exaust system off which should then give you access to the turbo.

Are you sure it’s not the manifold? The ticking you talk of is usually a leak between it and the turbo, had it on my ghibli once.

Changed the gasket and hey presto!

Found this company on the web ( Turbo Dynamics ) advertising new Turbo's for the 3200 at £873.53 probably plus vat.

Still if correct they still over£2K cheaper than Eurospares

Hi Rex...can you put up all details possible on the Alternative parts thread? Have you fitted one, exactly the same etc?

They are the same IHI part number I posted there, some months ago. The unit that I purchased is the original part (it has also the Maserati p/n engraved in). Price is almost the same :) although I purchased it from a German company

Hi

I have not used this company because to date I have not needed to but for anyone that needs a new turbo the web address is www.turbodynamics.co.uk. The part numbers are -

VA 660054 New genuine RFM5 - B IHI Turbo VM38R Turbo: for a Maserati 3300 Right Hand £873.53.

VA 660055 New genuine RFM5 - B IHI Turbo VM39L Turbo: for a Maserati 3200 Left Hand £873 .53

The OEM part numbers they quote are also correct and the saving against Eurospares is £1,634 plus vat.ea

If you do use Turbo Dynamics, ask if they can do a hybrid turbo. Turbo technology has moved on an awful lot since 2000 and you might find a hybrid gives you less lag and more reliability.

The design and size of the turbine and compressor blades can significantly alter the dynamics and efficiency of the turbo and different bearings or bearing material can improve reliability.

I don't think so, but new turbos are streets ahead of what they used to be like and may well transform the 3200s performance. It would be interesting to see. We need a trail blazer to find out!

Credit where credit is due, the 3200 for all its faults you would have thought the turbo system would have been a right nightmare, but quite the opposite, they have been pretty much bomb proof.

To true Dem I do miss the old 3200 spooling up sort of fancy another one really. Of course I would have to do the 4200 rear light conversion on her though!!!

Ok forgive me, I have just got back in from the pub!

God, all we talked about all night were these blessed riots, done on now on the subject!

I did experienced a fatal failure in one of the turbos... (someday I will post the pictures of the post-mortem), however the price of the repair with an original IHI turbo replacement, same to those at Formula Dynamics, was less than the replacement of a turbo in a Audi A4 2.5TDI (I have a friend with that experience)
