Transmission failure warning light - 2005 Duo Select QP

Hi all,

While cruising on the M25 yesterday in 6th gear, the dashboard flashed up "Transmission failure" for 5-10 seconds. It did the same about 10 minutes later. I put it in 'Auto' mode and made it home with no problem about 40 minutes later. I was worried what would happen when I stopped at traffic lights, but thankfully the gearbox worked fine, even when I switched back to manual mode.

I have had the car for 2 ½ years now, and when I previously had a transmission failure light, it truly did fail - it was the relay the first time, and 6 months later, the F1 pump failure was the cause and was subsequently replaced. A little Googling led me to find that some people have experienced strange transmission failure warnings related to the brake switch. As you can buy one for about £14, I figured there's no harm in replacing it so I have just ordered one. I also noticed that the cruise control wasn't working yesterday. Could this be related?

One more thing, though not related, the NS mirror started tilting upwards instead of downwards when reverse gear is selected! Is this something that might be fixed by a battery reset? I also seem to remember that there is a sequence one should stick to when reconnecting the battery e.g leaving the ignition on for a minute before starting the car etc.

Thanks in advance for any help and advice :)

Battery reset will probably fix it. My NS mirror has a mind of it's own sometimes so I wouldn't worry about that.

I find on battery reset the same things don't happen every time, for example sometimes the soft touch car handles don't work first time, windows go wonky at first and sometimes I need the radio code sometimes I don't.

It always sorts itself out..

Get a new battery, none last 2.5 years and low voltage after being stood causes havoc with the electrics:

Best £80 you will ever spend

Thanks for the reply, sir :) Seems we both owned many of the same Alfas previously!

Hahah! The battery is only about a year old - a Duracell. I had a new Bosch which lasted only 6 months!! The Duracell seems to have plenty of power. The engine turned over very quickly after being stood for 2 weeks, alarmed, while I was away in July.

Thanks for the advice though. That Exide is very good value!

Its a very, very good battery too.

If the car has been sat for 4 weeks charge it up fully and drive it for the week, daily, chances are it will fix itself.

La Contessa has had several long thrashings since my return 4 weeks ago! The battery is fully charged without a doubt, but she clearly wants more attention ;)

I (and many others here) will vouch for this battery.

Brake switch can effect cruise control on most cars, its not working on the Brera, and I think it's the switch.
