Tiling outside wall

Garden has turned into a disaster zone.. Got some raised beds and seating area that are made of breeze block and rendered. The inside of the blocks are treated with waterproof tanking slurry, but there is no damp course (walls are only 1 or 2 blocks high. Its only been on 7 months but first frost and most of it has popped off (both on the bed part and the part with nothing behind the wall). Different people have done different jobs so they're each blaming the other (typical!).
I have given up with getting either to put anything right but this is my question..
Once I have removed the render and the blocks have dried.. if I painted with water proof acrylic and then tiled the walls (with 11mm porcelain tiles).. and as long as the job is done properly with no voids will they be frost resistant? i.e I am pretty sure the blocks will get wet again but will the blocks expand and pop the tiles.. or is the fact that no water can get between the blocks and the tiles mean that they will be ok?? Before and after pics

Feel your pain. Mine has done exactly the same this year but has been fine for a couple of yrs no problem. Also slate tiles on the wood oven have fell off too!

without a DPC you will not keep them dry enough IMO, even a waterproof covering will break down over time and probably reduce tile fixing adhesion.

Thats what I was wondering..
Also if the frost gets to the wet block could it pop the tile off if the waterproof covering is in place?

Have a look at something called brick slips tracking boards or brick slip tracking panels.

Basically its an insulated board you can afix to the breeze blocks and then fix your tiles, brick slips or stone slips to the boards.

Link below for one brand. Others are available bit i suspect it will do what you need as its for outdoor or indoor use.

Are you close to West Wales? I could teach you how to lime render it. Absorbs moisture then releases it by the process of evaporation. Just like hanging washing out to dry. Simple, but not yet fashionable I suppose.

You don't want to tile on to a painted surface, tile adhesive will not stick for long to it, needs a good surface to 'key into'

Yes the plan would be to remove the render first. The acrylic is a primer

Never tiled an outside structure, so not 100% qualified, but my inkling would be to tile straight on to the breeze block, could be worth asking a company that builds swimming pools, as usually lots of tiling involved in those.

Even though the breeze block will end up wet and probably freeze at some point?

Found these

Would you not be tiling every face of the breeze block? so making it waterproof? Those tile backer boards are good, we use them or something similar all the time, not sure about that makes suitability for outside use. I use Knauf Aqua panel for doing showers, and I am sure they do a version of that for outdoor use, might be worth investigating.

Not all sides... in any case there is no damp course...
Also looking at s2 adhesive thinking that the extra flexibility would ensure any frost wouldn't lead to popping of the tile?

could send you some of the sauce Charlotte made for last weeks dinner, that stuff has to be soaked in acid for a week to get it off the kitchen surfaces.

That was a weekend I never want to repeat. All the render is off...
