The reactions of others

I've wanted a QP since they were released. I've been considering buying one for a very long time. I researched buying one for a long time. I actively started looking before Christmas; I looked at and test-drove many. By the time I eventually put one in my garage I had had a lot of time to come to terms with the idea of owning a Trident.

What has really surprised me is the reaction of others.

Friends and family whom I had considered to have zero interest in cars have been queuing up for a ride. Even my other half who's uninterested attitude to cars can be summed up by her phrase "I don't care what you buy so long as it's automatic" has been telling all her mates that we have a Maserati. This turned out to be an own goal when she told some Polish friends just before we asked them (they are in the building trade) to source some painters for us. The price that came back reflected the conversation which I imagined took place concerning the car in our garage.

I painted the flat myself instead :(

My father-in-law, who has always been dismissive of my other Italian cars over the years, is positively gushing about the Quattroporte. He has been bringing neighbours from near and far to show it off to them. I'm bemused by it all. Sure it's a lovely car but I wasn't expecting this level of worship.

Now if only I can find a way to charge them all I might pay for some of this petrol :)

We all feel like that Michael, that's why whenever we look at other brands, nothing seems to quite hit the mark. Another one who's been well and truly bitten by the Maserati bug. It's astounding the level of respect, worship etc we all get from all, be they young or old, rich or poor. EVERYONE loves a Maserati, a Quattroporte being the most well-regarded of the lot in my experience.

I remember when me and the wife were in Oxford just after Christmas, and a QP pulled into the outlet village car park, and everyone just stood and looked at it and I thought people were going to start clapping at one stage!

The QP and the GT have so much presence.

A Ferrari is a bit obvious, a 911 just says banker and most other things are just too in your face as Parisien says.

Very true. I think everyone on here has a funny tale to tell, from marriage proposals to rections in traffic jams.....my favourite, was my Mother in law, who has ZERO interest in cars, when taking her out in the GS, managed to mutter something along the lines of "oouf, doesnt it sound lovely?"

Theres a convert, right there....

Mine is parked outside the in-laws at the moment while our garden and drive are being bull-dozed. The mother-in-law is delighted - I'm concerned she might not let me have it back.

It's a bit like those lines you hear in car reviews:

Harry Metcalfe: "Huge pride when you tell someone you own a Maserati.......the name..... it's magic really"

Jason Plato (5th Gear): "Tell people at a party that you drive a Lamborghini or Ferrari, well, they're going to back-off, assuming that until last week, you were one of those lottery winners.
Tell them you own a Maserati..................well.......................they're going to want your Room Number."

I don't like getting claps when driving on the road, or when parking her..Feel uncomforatble, cause the trident was bought to cover my passion for driving..I am sure there are a lot of people admiring what i drive, there are also a few gossiping. Jurks are everywhere.
But i prefer to see girls, just watching me!

Overall it's a nice feeling to know that people know what you have in your garage. But don't really like to show her to them.. It's like having a lover, apart from your wife...

Not sure I'd be happy to be clapped either, Nikos. Waves, smiles and positive comments suit me just fine. :) My wife still comments on how much joy the car seems to bring to other people as well as to me. She is not bothered about the noise but the boys and I love it and it certainly turns heads.

Last weekend whilst working on my son's car I needed a part and shot of to Halfords in oily shorts, T shirt and sandals with no more than a wash of the hands:

As I came out of Halfords (was parked pretty much right outside) there wasa couple probably 60ish walking past the back of the car and the fella was looking really intently at itand I caught his eye and smiled at him, not quite sure what he hought of this oily oik doing that but as his Mrs dragged him on he looked around as I plipped it open and executed a well lubriucated entry! I must admid on such occasions the car seems to need a lot of throttle to start? :) And as I drove out of the carpark he had lined Mrs up and I had a guard of honour!!!

Very strange at times but I have never had a single negative reaction.

When I had my Elise, only the petrol head friends and family wanted to have a look when calling around.
Now as well as the petrol heads, it's the non petrol head girls that are most interested, usually the wife's of friends! Much to the amusement of the wife!

My mother, God bless her, has always regarded my various assortment of sports cars with bemusement over the years. I feel like I have finally " grown up" as she regards my 3200 as a "true gentelman's car" I can't ask for any more than that.

What i just remembered: The first time my mother entered the 4200 was for a trip to her sister's place, approx 650 kms drive. My mother's afraid of speed, fast cars etc etc, though she drives for 30 years.. Once we started, i was in 1st gear (obviously) and it was time for 2nd... She felt the effect of the cambiocorsa change with DBW on, and told me "Nikos, please don't make me be in fear.." i replied, "Mum, i cannot do something for that"...After five hours of driving, she loved the gear changes...but not the acceleration, or the terror sound in every tunnel, once i opened the window...

Sweet family things they...

From my Atom forum post..my experience..
"The Atom is without question the most photographed car in Cyprus. The looks it gets are of astonishment and disbelief…..

The Maserati draws as much attention….but the looks are of envy.
