The world was different then. Now, we have encroached heavily on animal habitats so the zoonotic transfer of diseases is much more likely in the first place. To compound that, we're a far more populous planet with far more travel so those diseases then spread far more quickly. Spanish flu in 1918 killed millions , communication and medicine have moved on since then but stupidity seems to have negated the advances in technology .
