Still looking for Maser No. 3

Like Matt I am finding the availability of 4200/GS somewhat slim...and that's not just the time of the year. Seems like no one is selling anything nice with low miles...or have they all been used too much.

If nothing comes up soon before the 100 years even I may have to broaden my horizons and even get a 3200 as a stop gap...Dickey has a nice red one for sale at the moment. http://www.richardgracecars.co.uk/listing/maserati-3200-gt-4/

Andy, it went some time back as I was/am working in London and don't use the car...in fact I hardly drive these days, hence I'm down to one trusty steed.

Bought the second one two years ago...time flies, sold it in the spring...

Well Benny as I don't drive very often the reliability would not be an issue...whoops forgot the truce...head held in shame...

Oh heres something to bring me back to earth...despite the dreadful voice over...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xPqteGyKdo

We will have less of the sniping during the truce. I know it's not really sniping, it's like hitting ducklings with a shovel but whatever it is, we will have less of it! ;)

So just to freshen your mind Pete about how "long in the tooth" the 3200 is now I will leave these here. freshly winter prepared today. Sorry but this is better looking than any other Maserati Variant out there including the GT and new Ghibli.

Good luck finding one though, the trend has reversed and value is on the up. 4 on Pheads and average price is 15k. Of those on Autotrader they are both auto's and on the high miles side hence the sub 10k price. Give it a year or two and these will be in GranSport value territory.

Peter I feel your pain and your observations are correct.

In my mind a descent GranSport with mid to late 30's on the clock in LE guise is worth £24k, maybe a grand more for an exemplerary model. The issue is that 9/10 cars have fallen into the trades hands so very few private examples come up.

When they do, they are loaded by £3 or £5k

Last summer you would have to wait no longer than 3 or 4 weeks to find a descent private example, but of late, and at the lowest point of the year, a couple of GS's have come to light and stupid money. Then anyone else wanting to sell their car look at the ones for sale and again over value their car.

What should drive price is supply and demand, the supply is their but nobody is going to pay silly money for them, Hence cars are just hanging round for ages and until the current crop clear prices will remain inflated and the market stagnant.

Also the GS has this stupid 50k mile barrier thing, once they go over they become worthless.

As a case in point, a new member on here has just bought the grey with full tan leather GS from Simon Jordan in Bristol. It is in excellent condition and a great spec and colour combo, 49k miles and descent clutch. It's been for sale for 4 months and finally sold for we assume £22k. Simon has got a great car for the right money.

This car took 4 months to sell so what hope has someone with the same spec and mileage for nearly £30k.

I phoned up a private seller and offered £26k for an LE with 40k miles on the clock and he just laughed at me!

The markets gone made so I, like Peter and 3 others I know of simply will wait it out till the market corrects itself.

Rant over, back to strictly.... I love those flappy skirts!

Peter, I have been eyeing up the 3200 lately too. I am also on the hunt for an Alfa 3.2 phase 3 GTV, I have one lined up so I might just settle for that for now, similar performance, Italian designated, and has the feel of a proper Italian sports car.

0-60 in 6 dead, 160mph and would stick to a 4200 point to point and not be too embarrassed in a straight line drag.

...but it's not a Maserati.

A nice example Peter and it will always look good in Rosso Mondiale, but don't forget the chains at 63k. I did like the RM 4200 that Dicky had, albeit a manual. I have half a mind to go and look at the 3200 at Hook; low miles and a good match for my 4200.

There's always Dem's AC as well.

Cam chains are recommended at 67.5k miles or 110,000kms. Personally I would get the chain inspected. Generally they are robust and when they do start to wear they get loud. That loud that you struggle to have a conversation next to the car when it is running.

Also why worry about manual cars. I drive an auto and manual back to back and there is IMO no comparison. The manual is much more involving to drive and means a quicker and better package. Granted the M5 box is notchy when cold but very nice once warm and means you can really grab the car by the scruff if the neck.

I've nothing against manuals, but folk (including me) seem to prefer the CC's so a manual may be harder to move come sale time.
