A click is all you get when its gone. Mine went in exactly the same way, I even called the AA as I thought my jump leads weren't up to the job. I got a tow start to get home. The how to is exactly what I followed, should take about 4 hours start to finish, mine took all day as one of the plenum bolts was seized. Make sure you read the entire thread of the how to guide as I know it doesnt mention draining the cooling system until further down in the thread.

Hi Nick,

Yep, I believe you could be right on this

I have read Neil's post and how to guide and he states the exact same way my car has gone, sounded like the battery going and then nothing.

So tomorrow off out to get the part and then buy flowers for Pauline as a weekend has just disappeared again! Got to keep in the good books!

I am starting to think its the starter also, as its so cheap I would just take the afternoon off and do it, as an Auto sparky will have you down £100 before you know whats hit you.

Yeah, hi Matt,

Defo on calling out any mechanic to view it

So out and about to get the replacement starter motor and off we go !

Still trying to put together my how to guide on replacing the heater matrix, which worked out a treat with no problems... just getting the time to sit down is the thing !

If you do it yourself you should also allow for a couple of litres of antifreeze and 8 inlet manifold O rings as these should really be replaced when you take the minfold off.

Also whilst you are under there flip the plenum and make sure the plate on the bottom is secure, my screw fell out and they where sitting in the V of the block. Worth taking them all out and locktight them all, making sure the gasket is good. Mine revved up to 3k rpm on it's own as the air leak confusses the TB/ecu/MAF

Hi Rex,

Do you feel the O rings are std off the shelf form that a good motor factors would stock? Or a Mas specific part?

Hi Paul

I am sure they are fairly standard but I don't know the diameter and you will not have a sample until you take the manifold off. The part number from Eurospares is 14459081 at 93p each but thay don't apprear to have stock at present. Depending on your location Bill McGraths in Kimpton keep maserati spares and might have some or HR Owen at at Park Royal, failing that you my have to refit your existing ones providing thay don't look perished.

Hi All,

Just an up date to this thread from earlier in the year,
I sourced the starter motor from a company in Reading called Thames Valley Electro-Diesel they were excellent!
Its all they do - mainly for the trade but when I quoted the Valeo number they got it the next day and were very helpful, would highly recommend. Most auto factors wanted the car reg and then would quote "computer says no!"
The starter motor had a different gear housing but once changed over with existing no problems.

Price £77.00

Just to bump an old thread: I had a similair issue with my 3200 GTA yesterday and I immediately suspected the starter motor. The battery was all fine but nothing happened when turning on the ignition. This morning I had a visit from the Dutch equivalent of the RAC and he asked me to put the car in neutral and ...... it started immediately. After I had put it back in P, it started at once as well. So, probably a faulty sensor or something like that. I think all of you will understand how silly I felt. My take away for the day: if it doesn't work, don't always suspect the worse.

Ciao, Danny

Hi Danny,

Just to clarify, this problem was solved with a new starter motor on my car, which was strange as I had only replaced it within 18months prior.

Strange I know

Danny, it could be the rotary switch on the gearbox, it inhibits starting unless the gear lever is in N or P it gets worn and although the display says P and the gearbox is in P the switch is not and it wont go. if it refuses again, put it in gear and back in P but lean on it with your hand so its pressed forward and see if it goes, if this works its the contact switch, is on the outside of the gearbox underneath, they are about £90. you can fiddle with the gear lever linkage to try and get this to work but you are altering the connection to the box then! so better just replacing the switch.

Thanks Davy, for the moment I assume that I didn't put it in P properly because it never happened before or since but I will keep an eye on it.
