So why is a miner like GGP getting pummeled if the future is gold and the gold ETCs struggling to keep their head above water? Are they dragged down by everything else.

Miners rely on human beings to mine....potentially all Ill.
Gold above ground is on sale at highest bid.
Equitiy investors are heavily leveraged, margin calls,selling whatever they have.
Listen this situation is about damage limitation, if you haven’t gathered that yet.
Any fall in gold is an opportunity, Buy dips.

I suspect gold & silver coming off is deleveraging (they would form parts of portfolios of other leveraged investments for funds) and secondly the urgent need for cash USD as a commodity itself (due to the same deleveraging).
The whole world is like a bouncy castle that someone just poked. Full on deleveraging is a violent, costly exercise. Securities have no home so prices gap lower.
