A general question really, if there was a small scratch or scuff would you let a company like "chips away" et al do the job or go to a specialist bodyshop?

I have a Chipsaway guy whose work is frankly brilliant. All the repairs he has done have been un-detectable. (At least to me).

Problem is, it's a franchise. No idea if the chap next door is as good....

this is the potential problem, there is a bit that needs tending to in a hidden bit so might try them out on that before doing the parking rash on the bumper someone had left behind and scarpered with no note!

Don't you just hate it when that happens?
The only think more annoying is when you scrap the front dam on a curb, parking.

iv seen shocking work carried out by these kind of people, as said, 1 person working there may do a brilliant job, another person rubbish, im extremely fussy though, i have never ever seen any respraying that has been 'perfect'

Exactly what I have found, find a good one and they are brilliant but that is no guarantee the next one will be. Take it to a bodyshop then if they feck it up then they will have to re lacquer it FOC.

When I used to be in the industry, there was a sort of unwritten guide that went along the lines of: " Sprayers tend to spend about 10 years perfecting their art, they have about 5 years at a peak then the solvent's get to them". I'm sure it is different now with multi-pack paints and forced air masks but if you get a good sprayer hang onto him as there are many, many poor ones out there.

A really good one will come out to your car with 1,001 colour swatches and in natural light will use a loupe to look at the flecks in the paint and swatch to get the blend right, screw what the paint codes tell them, that's just the starting point!

Ross, I knew several but I've been out of if for 10 years and a lot of things have changed in that time. I need to find a good one myself.

I searched high and low and the ones I found didn't do that.

That said, it may be the case that they do the items that you mention when they've actually got the car and are preparing to do the work, rather than when they are looking at it to provide a quote.
