New I should have joined Air Force. I was a JSMEL and rock climbing instructor so I got to do loads of adventure training for free. The only thing was it was bloody hard work at times. I was “volunteered” once to take different groups of Irish Rangers out hill walking for 3 weeks around Gairloch head. 6 days a week between 14 and 17 miles a day. It was the same route each day but I let them map read!!! Yep, they were that bad.

We lived in SA for 5 years but unfortunately never got to travel around that much.
Fabulous! Where did you live?
I spent my childhood (age 1 to 18) in SA before my parents dragged me back to the UK, kicking and screaming(!) in 1991

12-17.5!! I dragged myself back in 1985. We lived in a place called Secunda in Transvaal. Basically a town built to house workforce for the petro chemical plant.

Wow so we were there at the same time! I wasn't far away from you, as we were in Rivonia (JHB) from 1979 to 1991.

Such a special country - we are blessed to have experienced it ...

Yep. As I’m older now I have realised it really was a great place to spend my teens.

You can tell he was an orrificer (but no gentleman) the air force paid for me to go surfing in Newquay for a week.

Dont get me started on forces money waste on Jollies , for around 5/6 years on the trot i used to meet up with RAF , Army and Navy bob sleigh teams in Igls in Austria , great laugh though , and got to do many absolutely stupid bizzare antics , like riding down the bob sleigh run on bin liners at 3 in the morning , with i might add Prince Albert of Monaco , game guy as well

I wouldn't say money wasted, we had good team building exercises. My biggest regret is not learning to ski with the AAC when I was detached to them in the mid-90's. Their colonel was a big snowboarding nut. A couple of the guys are still ski instructors today.
