Sainz to replace Vettel. Good or bad?

As the title says.
What do you think?
I hope Carlos will be better than Vettel but my money is on Le Clerc being fast when the season starts.

He's a young driver who's been team leader at McLaren but will be Number two to LeClerc, a bit like Eddie Irvine to Schumacher. McLaren's loss, but rumour control has Ricciardo in Sainz old seat.

Used to be an avid F1 fan , but in the last 7/8 years ive lost total interest , and cant recapture it , i feel it has to return to a more grass roots style of racing so the decent talent comes through rather than the nepotism that exists in teams today

Daniel Ricciardo McLaren deal was announced this morning.

Shame I would have preferred to see him in the dancing donkey.

It's a good move for both parties. In Sainz they get a fast driver that looks the part, is a sponsors dream and works hard with the engineers to understand the car. He also speaks fluent Italian. He's fast enough to push LeClerc, he's likely to beat him some of the time. For Sainz, he gets a chance at a top team and he will think he can beat LeClerc, although he may not be allowed to with Ferrari.

Ricciardo gets into a car that is on the ascendancy, where Renault have faltered and seem to lack direction. He will have wanted the Ferrari drive however they have backed LeClerc and don't want to pay two high earning drivers. Ricciardo will be pushed by Norris who continues to prove himself as competent and likeable. Norris will learn from him as well.

For Vettel, I think that the Covid outcome which has drastically shortened this season (if they race at all) and pushed back the rule changes to 2022, have combined for him to know that the red cars are not an improvement on last season and so he is likely to be unable to challenge again until 2022, when he would be out of contract anyway. Usually a driver would be smart enough to have a seat ready before breaking a contract but in this case, I think he might actually retire or at least take a sabbatical until 2022. He has repeatedly said that he doesn't need the money and is enjoying extending time with family away from racing.

The only think that might keep him in a car is Mercedes if they choose to swap out Bottas. That would be a big gamble for all parties but also one that sells newspapers and so you never know.

I think this good all round, firstly Ferrari get a solid second driver who will be more than capable of taking results if Leclerc has any issues, he is also fast enough to ensure Leclerc is pushed very similar to Bottas and Hamilton. Ricciardo gets a car on the up with the Merc engine from 2021. Norris gets an experienced driver to learn from and who he has a realistic chance of beating if he comes with his A game. McLaren get that balance of youth and experience but both with a desire to win.

And best of all that whinging German is put out to grass, can't see him going to Renault and there doesn't look like any other seats becoming available.

Vettel is a T pot it is down all the way for him now, he should retire with what vestiges of greatness he has left

Shame, but I totally agree
He's not stupid, he doesn't need the money, so why not just walk away and enjoy life in a different way..
4 time world champion, he's got nothing to prove!

I'm a bit with lozcb.... Been hard to get excited by F1 the past few years. It's almost irrefutable... Those on the podium generally have the most supremely engineered cars. Whilst Hamilton and to a lesser extent rosberg are celebrated for their achievements, its been those working on drivetrain and power systems who deserve the real acclaim. Suspension and livery to red bull. Pit stops to Williams. And grosjean special mention for thinking he's a 5 year old playing dodgem cars at a circus...

Hamilton has had it far too easy in the last few years with Merc and there clever tech, he's not as good as you think!
Once the cost cutting measure's for 2021/2022 kick in, he'll call it a day as he and Merc wont be competitive..

You heard it hear first!

Mercedes are smart for example they could develop the engine in the amg one road car with a unlimited budget. Then use insight for the separate f1 unit. It would not be breaking the rules because they are developing a road car. Hamilton is still a great driver, just haven't seen him in a bad car in a while but 07/08 / lower division titles in f2 etc showed he is one of the best drivers.

Sainz is not going to be much slower if at all than Leclerc I guarantee it. I’m looking forward to seeing them fight for number 1 all over again (If Ferrari allow)..

Just out of interest..
When people like Sir Stirling Moss & Fernando Alonso say Hamilton is one of the greatest of all time, do you think they’re wrong and you’re right?

You might not like him but in this age he certainly is the best and has been for a few years, sure his car is good but you still need to drive it on the limit

The persona of anyone famous is what is reported by newspapers or pulp TV. They report the bad stuff often and the good stuff rarely.
In defence of Hamilton, look at the mutual inspiration of Billy Monger. He doesn't have to be seen with this kid.
So ignore the gossip and base your thoughts on the facts. 6 world championships.

Martin, you are quite correct but myself, like many just don’t gel with him.

As a person he has zero charisma and for me, that’s a major part of it.

Vettel, it’s been tough. Touted as the next Shui, he appears not to cope with the pressure. I’ve always liked him.

Saintz is a great driver and DannyRik equally. I look forward to having him at my team...McLaren.
