Rear tie rods

I was thinking about changing the rear tie rods on my 4200.

I would be interested to know if anybody purchased these from Formula Dynamics and if so what was the delivery time like?

Certainly members have purchased the originals from Craig and reported well. I've shipped a few sets back.

If delivery speed is not a problem, I can get some organised for my next trip over (June / July)

If its only the tie rod bearings worn these can be replaced for just £25 - SKF GE15C.

I had slight play and just needed new bearings.

The main problem is loosening the adjuster bolt in the wishbone, as they are usually well seized.

I ordered one of the kits from the US but never fitted it to my car as I sold it shortly afterwards.
If you require the kit, let me know.

Mine arrived, along with the ARB's, in around 10 days. Ensure that they send the correct sleeves (shorter) otherwise you run out of thread on the bolt.

Hence me getting the sockets made as removal of seized ones is pretty brutal and replacement is so much easier :)

Had to leave one complete wishbone in a bath of diesel for a week, then a lot of heat, large vice, then spanner attached to a length of scaffold pipe until it finally came free.

Was not exactly a nice Saturday afternoon job!

I contacted Craig Waterman and got his version. Larini (FDs agent in the UK) was asking extra for the rubber sleeves which craig includes as part of the kit. I did not contact FD direct for a quote though.

Highly recommend the tie rods it really makes the back end feel more connected with a little more feedback. The only criticism is that running over cats eyes when accelerating and changing lanes on the motorway can occasionally feel a little "gnarly" on the rear axel due to the increased rigidity

If you need sockets for the inboard end let me know, l have some stock.
Sorry Newton. Should have made it clearer. I was hoping to purchase some and get someone else to fit them. I don't have the facilities or expertise to do the job myself. Especially after reading some of the horror stories on here about the difficulties in trying to remove the old ones.

Have you seen Craig Waterman's video guide?

Yes I have and if it was going to be that simple I would probably give it a go. But my tie rods look as if they just been removed from the deck of the Titanic. They are cruddy and heavily rust encrusted and I don't want to find myself in a situation like the earlier Gp79 post.

Ooooh - sounds like erring on the side of caution is the order of the day. How's Dover today? My Niece lives there. Do you think the sea air has played a part with the tie-rod condition ?

Not a problem, let whoever does it for you know they are available if they run into difficulties.

Less like caution, more like cowardice.

The weather here in Dover has been very pleasant, It is 21 degrees Celsious at the moment. Do you ever come down to see your Niece?

I don't think the state of the tie rods is related to our proximity to the sea as the car has only been here for 8 months. Prior to that it was in Derbyshire for 3 years which is well away from the sea. Interestingly enough the car was originally purchased from Graypaul in Edinburgh and spent the next nine years there.
Maybe it is a result of that dreek scottish weather.
Although I see on the t.v. that Edinburgh only had 4mm. of rain in April, much less than us.

Edinburgh on the other hand....
Interestingly enough the car was originally purchased from Graypaul in Edinburgh and spent the next nine years there. Salty air may not have been the cause so much rather salty roads. Unless maybe on the Firth itself - Portobello for example. The number of properties you see with rotten window frames.
Maybe it is a result of that dreek scottish weather. I'm impressed you're aware of the expression, although, naturally, I haven't a clue what you're talking about - it's always sunny in Scotland :)

I know a few in Chicago who wrap a number of exposed parts in Denso tape. They swear by it.

That is a blast from the past, Denso tape (do they still make it?). Thirty years ago when I worked on the cross channel ferries we used wrap all our exposed parts in Denso tape. Partly for corrosion resistance and partly because senior management didn't like us exposing our parts in front of the passengers.

Denso tape is still used as a temporary repair to leaking gas valves, I was told by a gas engineer recently!

You can still buy them direct from Craig waterman, I did a couple of months ago.
