Only way to stop a RR rusting is have an oil leak or two although over here its a NCT failure so ours has none just a libel coating of undesired protection every couple of years or so

That’s not the diff it’s the bellhousing I’d guess it’s a sump or rear main seal leak, could be an engine out job. Could also be the gearbox/torque converter but it does look like it’s coming from front to back.

I’d be more worried about rust on a classic Range Rover to be honest.

Thanks. Yes, bellhousing of course. Seems odd to have so much oil all over it - a few random oil leaks make sense, but how is this happening? I'm not afraid of having to fix a few things, but don't want a £5k bill!

Overall the RR looks pretty good for age. A lot of surface rust underneath, but doesn't seem to be seriously rotten.

Difficult to tell from the picture if the oil is fresh so a big leak or just accumulated over time.

Sump and crank seal leaks are often big because there’s a lot of oil against the seal unlike a rocker cover for example. Get the inspection plate off the bellhousing and see whether it’s dry inside.

I’ve not had a Range Rover but if it was a Landie you could pull the gearbox to do the crank seal and not have to take the engine out. It’s the labour that’ll cost, the seal or gasket is pennies.

I've had this supercharged 4.2 RR for 11 months now and nothing has fallen off , no breakdowns

I thought about letting it go as it needs some money spending on a list of minor jobs

heated seat/wheel/ front screen , they don't do any of that , annoyingly the passenger seat is fine

it needs welding , rear arches and sills , panels are about £320 plus fitting

new rear prop
gearbox flush
wheel refurb
4 new tyres

I'd think £2000-£2500 would sort that out which means I'd have about 6k in it

I look round at what 10k buys you in range rover world and they're all over 10 years old with the same mileage as mine so i may as well keep it and spend the money over a few months

MOT is up at the end of July so I'll see how that goes

They are lovely things. I very been looking for a while, wanted a petrol , looked at a few 4.2 sc and all rusty. Ended up with a jag 4.4 , High mileage 160000, but full land rover main dealer service history from new, including them doing the bodywork and everything on it works.
Such a hard search to find a good range rover , unless you can buy a new one with main dealer warranty

I saw a new one when I was out in my smart car

The smart looks like a toy car next to it , its massive

It’s amazing how quickly you get used to the size. Parking isn’t really an issue, especially not with the new ones with their four wheel steering. They are big, but not problematic big.

Wife has been taking the i3 and I've had the range rover for a few days, i reckon it lowers blood pressure and makes you drive more slowly

Probably going to be selling ours in the next few weeks, it's a 2009 S/C 5.0 Autobiography with loads of options including electric side steps, TV screens in rear head rests etc. etc tax here is stupid but there are so few S/C versions here they still command a price. Will stick it on at a silly price, what we paid for it 5 years ago, and see if I get any bites (the local 4x4 specialists thinks I will).

You'll miss it

What will you be replacing it with , I sold an impreza for something that did 40mpg and wasn't £600 to tax , a 1100 golf

I hated it , and I mean hated it , had it about 6 weeks , lost £1000 just to see the back of it

If you can afford to run it keep it , unless you're trading up

I pulled into the texaco at the end of the street in my 4.2 sc £1.41 for E10 , pulled the E5 handle out and £1.67 appeared on the display

Robbing ******* , the light was on so I stuck £10 in until I could get to a tesco

Drove it 11 miles and the light was back on , what's that 9mpg :D

I did hoof it along the A580 though

Used to have a 4.2 S/C and now have a 5.0 S/C Autobiography.

The first 4.2 S/C was getting a bit scabby but was a lovely thing, thought about going away from the L322 but love them and it’s only for occasional use.

Ours is grey with I think “cappuccino” leather :) Lovely wafty old bus and practical too.

Not so good is how noisy the 5.0 is on idle, I worry that it may suffer the timing chain issue at some point, have had it checked…

The 4.2 is bombproof and much more reliable than other engines I think, but it does have a drinking habit!

Love the colour of the leather.

This is ours, agree with noise on tick over but also had the timing chains checked and touchwood all seem good. Engine really never gets stressed it rarely gets above 2k rpm although when it does it really flies for something well over 2 tonne

I find the step off quite comedy, seems to take of quite sharply if you are not used to it and the nose rises sharply like a boat and the front wheels scrabble :)

Every time I drive it I have to re adjust to its wallowy cornering, but then my blood pressure drops and you just waft along :)

We have got off road tyres so it probably doesn’t help!

I love how there is hardly anything that they did not cover in leather too!!!
