Hi everyone,

One of my rear shocks are leaking on my 2009 Granturismo S 4.7 Auto (non-skyhook).

I’ve just purchased a replacement which scuderia website said would fit. However, I’m not overly confident as it’s definitely different part and the ball joints look like they could be different.

Can you take you take a look? Does anyone know if this would actually fit ok? Would I need to fit a new ball joint?

I'm not sure, but is it not prudent to change them in pairs, especially if they are different?

If one has gone then it's wise to change both while you're at it but it's not necessary. The first one will take two hours to do the second around five minutes*

Yeah good question. I did ask the garage as I know this is subjective and many/most will will say to do so. They actually said it’s not essential (both springs were replaced last year) but it’s fair to assume that advice would be on a like for like basis.

Hopefully someone can confirm re: the fitting and ball joint and then I can order another shock. I’ve double checked and it definitely looks to be the right part. Perhaps Maserati updated the design at some point? I just don’t want to put it in the garage for them to then state they can’t do the job.

Haha! Yeah, I attempted to do the fronts springs about a year or so ago and there was one nut I couldn’t shift! In the end gave in and took it to the pros! Was tempted to do this myself but it’s a failed mot so need it done quickly and struggling for time.

Agree about replacing in pairs. The 4.7 auto came as standard in the UK with skyhook so you have a very rare car.

The yellow damper looks suspiciously like a passive damper for a 4200. So while it is normal for a new damper to come without a bottom bush, something here doesn’t look right.

What part number is on the box? I assume it is in a Maserati box?

Looking again, this is the non-skyhook damper on Scuderia website

And this is the skyhook damper:

Conclusion: Your car does have skyhook.

Sorry.

Are you sure it's non-skyhook?
I thought -
Skyhook ones are silver with black springs
Non-Skyhook are Black with Green springs
MC are Black (MC logo) with Red springs.

Edit.... Zep got there first. Lol

Hmm, no I’m doubting it but I really didn’t think I did.
It definitely looks more like the skyhook version but I thought the 4.7 mc-shift came with it but the auto didn’t.
How do I check without jacking up the car and taking the wheel off?
Do you see anything in the console to indicate skyhook? I’ve never seen anything to suggest I have it.

Also, when removing, use heat on the bottom bolt. The upright is alloy, the bolt steel, if you overdo it the threads will leave with the bolt and it will need a helicoil.

Open the bonnet and remove the engine cover, if there is a wire coming out of the top of the strut, you have skyhook.

But from the pic you have already posted, you have skyhook.

In older cars the SH dampers had adjustable spring platforms, the later fixed. If you have to replace an old one with a new one, you’ll have to do both.

Or, if you have a suitable diagnostic tool (or can borrow one) you can check for the module.

So I didn’t even see this before as it was caked in dirt / grease. Zep and all are completely correct. It’s skyhook! Bugger!!
I hope scudera will take the return.

Over 1k each!?! I’ve got to do the headliner too! it’s becoming expensive considering what’s it’s now worth. ‍♂️

Sorry to hear that.
I thought I needed to replace both front shocks last year as the car was pulling to the left massively on power up shifts. Turned out to be a dodgy front alloy.
I appreciate that’s not what you’re up against so I truly feel for you. Not a cheap repair.
Get it done, then you’ll forget about it once you drive it again. Italian mistresses are a bit like that..
Coincidentally, I had my headliner done to Alcantara last year too.. looks and feels wonderful.

Thanks guys. New shock ordered and Scuderia said they’ll arrange for collection of incorrect shock. £1200 is a ‘shock’ but needs must! At that price I’m definitely only doing the one. Moving house so too many other priorities right now.

@Bebs: Did you get the alcantara done at a trim shop or do it yourself? Would love to see some pics.

Wow! Thats looks great and sounds like a bargain! I was quoted £1800 + vat for just the roof lining and that was refurb rather than a replacement. The local trimmer thought it was a bigger job and needed the windscreen off.
I’ll snap their hand off if I can get a similar deal.
