Some french man... De Troit...

Some Frenchman is correct but not the name, De Troit means the strait because the river is the strait between Canada & USA. His name was taken up by one of the US giant manufacturers which in turn came about as a break up from one of the other US giants

Monsieur Chevrolet - so called because he used to “sleep” with goats (and “chèvre” is french for goats?!)

La Salle? GM, sort of Cadillac premium brand.

I must admit i’ve forgotten the actual question.

OK time is up and I will pass the baton to Wanderer as he inadvertently did get the answer in his answer. The Frenchman I was looking for was Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac who was the man who named Detroit

Bizarrely Cadillac was formed after Henry Ford fell out with his backers, he went on to form the Ford Motor Company and they went on to form Cadillac

OK, as everyone seems preoccupied with Cheese, and scones, can I set a quick one to keep the thread going.
How did Duck Tape, (sometimes known as Duct Tape,) get its name?

For taping up their beaks during mating season - obviously ;)

"Ducks, unlike 97 percent of birds, have penises — super-long ones. They are among the best endowed (in terms of ratio of body to member) of all vertebrates. For example, the 1-pound, foot-long Argentinian lake duck has the longest of all with a member that is 4 inches longer than its body"
Richard Prum, professor of ornithology, Yale.

I think I recall claims that the name came from both directions: There was brand of tape called Duck Tape, and at the same time, people were starting to use tape to seal ducts, and somehow Duck Tape became the preferred brand of duct tape.

Yes Duck Tape, but what gave it the name duck?
