Well, I also think we should be asking why "Sigurður Sigurðarson" is not called "Sigurðar Sigurðarson" or "Sigurður Sigurðurson".

Because he didn't have the same name as his father. It's not rocket science :)
His name was Sigurður
His father's name was Sigurðar

Yes I understand how Icelandic names work, and I can see why you might think that. But a search for Sigurðurson in the Icelandic telephone directory gets no results, so presumably Sigurður is not a real Icelandic first name. I think there must be some grammatical change to the vowel going on, a bit like in German 'one apple, two apples' translates as 'ein Apfel, zwei Äpfel'

Of all the Icelandic people I know, the only person I could search on the Icelandic Telephone directory was björk guðmundsdóttir.... aka the pixie faced singer formerly of the sugarcubes...then I thought how much drift can a thread take?

I remember getting an Icelandic phone directory to look for an off licence in Reykjavik, that was an experience! lol
